I find myself commissioning semi custom rifles a lot lately. I don't have much money, but I know where to save a little money, and where trying to go cheap is dumb as hell. The first three things that Mausers need is a three position Wing safety, a new handle welded on, and custom bottom metal, and not necessarily in that order. Sights, barrel bands, and rust bluing are matters of taste and money, but the first three are not negotiable.

I have used Duane's and Blackburn's bottom metal with total satisfaction. Maybe I'll try one from Recknagle next.' That is the beginning and end of the entire discussion.

Yeah, some sort of stock is nice, as well.

I like a modified (reshaped etc.) milsurp bottom metal with a Brno mod 21 floorplate and a extra strong spring on big bore and I like Brno mod. 21 complete bottom metal and trigger that runs up into the grip to the grip cap and attached to the grip cap with a lip, on a 30-06 etc. its a little different and somewhat classier IMO than most commercial bottom metal..

I don't care for the wide bottom floor plate as it thickens the area with extra wood..Just my personal choice probably because I like lean and mean in every respect in a custom hunting rifle. If I get into the real big bores I want a drop box custom and a extra round or two..
