Krag manlicher
I've been working on this Krag manlicher for Jerry Liles for awhile now. I thought I would tease him and prove I really was working on it. I sent him these photos of it in the white. He asked me to share them with the group.

Here's the full length image that didn't come through for some reason.

I always like to be the guy at camp with the neatest rifle... this definitely fits the bill!

iirc: in 1995 Steve Meacham (the HiWall mfgr in Peck, ID) and I drove to the SHOT Show in Dallas. We stopped in at Champlins in OK to drool a bit. They had a simply gorgeous mannlicher stocked (in Birdseye Maple) 25 Krag.

I have a Danish Jorgenson-Krag sitting in the gunrack that I have been thinking about sporterizing. It is the one chambered in 8mmx58mmR cartridge, a sort-of necked down 45-90. WGG has a mannlicher stock pattern for the Krag. Hlll...

thanks for the picture,

Rich

This rifle is almost an accident. I happened to mention to Steve while discussing another project that I liked how slick a Krag worked and what a nice cartridge the .30-40 was for the woods and cast bullets. A few months later he tells me he just happens to have found a badly bubbaed Krag with an otherwise good action.

Well this has morphed into a lightweight walkabout rifle stocked for fast offhand shots much like a double barrel quail gun, especially suited for the feral hog problem we have. It is a simple rifle with nice lines and solid craftsmanship made to be used that won't be left behind in the safe.

I need to be more careful what I say in casual conversation.

Nice job Steve. Will you be bringing it to DSC? Hope to see you there.

The barrel band for the sling is interesting. Is it soldered on and then the sling screws into a base?

The barrel band is not fixed to the barrel. It is a close fit but will actually slide about 1/4" farther up the barrel. There is a brass "pillar" between the swivel stud and the band. The pillar is epoxied to the stock. This way the barrel and wood are held together but the barrel can still expand and contract. To go along with this line of thinking, the muzzle cap is also not a tight fit on the barrel.

I have another manlicher I built years ago and didn't do things this way. It will put the first 3 shots into an inch, the next 3 into three inches, the next 6 into 8 inches. Let it completely cool and it will put 3 into an inch right on top of the first three. Works fine when hunting but not what I like.

Oh no...here I go again. My father was born in 1916, and he acquired a30-40 Krag as a teen to hunt Whitetails in Wisconsin. I think he paid $4.25 for it. I still have it. I'd love to follow Jerry's lead, and turn it into a Mannlicher sporter. Just when I thought I was all "gunned-up" :-(

Careful now. Steve informs me he just happens to have another Krag action that's looking for a project.

I've got my Greatgrandfathers Krag as well. He shot NRA and he did the allowable modifications to the stock when the C stock was introduced for the Springfields.

They basically cut the stock, and just left about a two inch piece in the middle. Then they added a piece on the top to show the sights better, and a strip on the bottom to form a pistol grip.

I bought a B-square side mount and stuck a B&L 36X scope on it, just to see what it would do.
Those old rifles shoot very well.

I'd be curious to see how much Steve would want to replicate yours...
