Does anyone have a Griffin & Howe sporter like the one Hemingway had that they could give me the barrel specs on. I am looking for length and contour (muzzle dia., shank in front of receiver, etc.)I am having one built in the spirit of Hemingway and was wanting to get it as close as possible. Any other info you might have would be helpful like; what kind of buttplate/recoil pad, pistol grip cap, etc. I have a book "Hemingway's Guns" but am lacking photos of some of the details. Photos would be great. Thanks in advance.

why not simply contact the firm directly? I'm sure they'll have historical data to share with you.

I would think G & H should have this as well. AR member xausa I believe has some G & H's too. He may see this or maybe try to PM him.

From the pics I have seen, the grip cap is a raised style and there was a small oval (silver or gold, who knows?) between the grip and lower sling swivel. Make sure you have the side mount installed but don't use it!

From the pic I have the barrel from the front of the action is about 10 times the length of the side mount. Find the length of that and see if that is close to 24 or so. G & H is closed until the 9th.

BTW, I do have the side mount already (along with the removable section and rings). Hemingway removed the scope saying they were for "nuns and virgins". A 2.5x Zeiss I believe. I'll try to post photos as I go along.

What is the length of the side mount in the long axis?

I have a G&H side mount that came off a win pre 64 mod 70 in .375H&H if any one is interested.

Griffin & Howe Springfield sporters were built around barrelled actions of NRA Springfield Sporters obtained from the Director of Civilian Marksmanship. The barrel profile was the same as that of the M1922 .22 lr caliber Springfield target rifle, which is somewhat larger than the diameter of the service rifle barrel at the breech, since there was no provision for a service rear sight (breech diameter 1.20").

Here are some photos of a G&H Springfield sporter I sold last year. It is virtually identical to Hemingway's rifle.









The steel buttplate is the same as the one later used on Model 70 rifles and the grip cap is a plain steel oval. Steel buttplates with a trap to house the slide on the Lyman 48 rear sight were also an option.
