Beautifully done. Thanks again for your time and effort posting the progress.

Shoot 'till it's dead, especially if it bites.

Brad HinnProgress is a little slow this weekend. I had to go in to work yesterday and I am behind on my honey do list. So I was only able to spend a short amount of time on my project today. I was able to glue in the studs for the swivels. There is some rust on the swivels from all my handling and some release agent so they look a little grungy.
The next step will be to sand them down to the contour of the stock and then number the swivels and screws so I can get them back in the same place.

LesBrooksBrad,
You have a very good write up and pictures to show. I am late getting to this topic, but glad to see people sharring their experiences.
Now study checkering and learn that process. You probably have the ability to checker the stock with a little help.

Brad HinnLes,
Thanks for the kind words, your thread on stockmaking was one of the inspirations for this thread.
As far as checkering goes, I am not sure I am ready to take that leap. I have tried it a few times and have failed miserably! Some day I will do it, but I think that I will have to take some instruction from someone the get there.

Mike_DettorreBrad,
You simply need the write tools. For me the right tool for just about every job is a check book.
Mike Never under estimate the internet community to use any opportunity to reply to a post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence problem. What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Brad HinnToday I finished up the sling swivels and timed my bottom metal screws.
Here is the sling swivel before I started fileing it to match the contour of the butt.
Here it is during fileing
Sanding down flush and smooth
Cleaned off.
Here I am cutting the front action screw so the screw slot so it is timed “north and south”
Here it is installed, yes there is a gap between the bottom metal and the stock in front of the front reciever screw. That is one of the downsides to a semi-inleted stock, I cant make wood magically re appear where it is not.
25 September 2012, 06:16
Vol717Brad,
Good job. Much of the action inletting can be done with a Dremel. I use a cordless unit and only a couple of bits for all inletting work. One looks like and end mill, the other like a side mill, and the third is a little carbide ball.
Quick, Cheap, or Good: Pick Two
30 September 2012, 00:34
Brad HinnToday I worked on a few odds and ends. I trimmed the action screws to length, inletted the bolt and assembled everything to check the scope alignment and function of everything before I started finishing the stock.
I like to use nuts to mark where I want to trim, then when you remove them the threads are nice and clean. Here is me cutting the screw to length
Inletting the bolt.
Everything assembled checking fit.
The stock has been sanded down to 400 grit then a coat of polyurethane has been applied to seal the wood.
I am now going to wet sand with 600 grit paper and minwax wipe on poly as a lubricant. When the poly starts to dry I will wipe it with paper towels across the grain to start filling the pores. Here is a picture of my sanding blocks and the stock before I started finishing. I was not able to take pictures during the finishing process as it gets a little messy.
Here is the stock after the first sand in coat of finish.

Brad HinnMike,
I was thinking about the barnes 120 gr TSX. But I havn't decided yet. I was going to go to midway and start reading bullet reviews and see what people are saying. I don't have any other 7mm's so I am not really up to speed with what people like.
01 October 2012, 09:44
craigsterI've had excellent results with Hornady 139 Interlocks. But then, you can't use them in Condor country.

Yep that is my inspiration. My garage is my “man zone” and is decorated accordingly.

Brad HinnProgress has been slow lately, it is really hard to take pictures of a gunstock while finishing and really show the finish. I have the grain about 95% filled in now I am ready to cut it back with FFFF then I will apply a thin coat of Linspeed to give it that hand rubbed look. Here are a few pics.
I have started working the metal work prepping for finishing. Here is a pic when I started.
Here I am sanding it with a home made block. I started at 320 then 400 and I will end up at 600. This is work in process and I will post pics when I am done.
I need to find someone that can engrave my name and cartridge on the barrel. I usually do it with stamps but I want this one to be a little nicer.

A pair of Talley one-piece rings, in ex-low for 1" tubes!
Other then that.. very nice!

Brad HinnI am in the final stretch now. But the going is slow, polishing takes a long time and I know from experience if I rush it I will round corners. Soon the metal will go off the be hot blued, the wood off to get checkered then it will come home to be shot.
Now I have to rethink my scope ring choice! I like the talley's but the ones that I have seen on the Remington 700 hang over into the bolt/receiver opening. To me that just does not look right. We will see
Here are some pics from the polishing process.

209jonesBrad, that is looking pretty sweet.I have a Rem Classic in 7-08, it is a keeper. I have built a couple of stocks for my schuetzen rifles, both from curly maple. Neither one is really finished, and then this year I picked up some decent walnut for them. One of the maple ones is a keeper, so some of that walnut may go on a Stevens I have. I will probably be back at it over Xmas and beyond. What you are doing here with the buttplate and swivels and the brass screw inserts is a great idea. I think I am actually getting inspired from this thread.

Brad HinnHey guys, no update today. I spent the weekend camping with my son and his Cub Scout Pack
Kaboom, I am probably going to send the metal off to hot flash to get it blued.
Labdad, I will have to go check them out. I have not decided what I am going to do with the mounts and rings yet.
209, I am glad that this thread is inspiring you, that is why I did it. My way of giving back the the forum for all the inspiration and information that I have gotten off this forum. Please post your project when you get going!

Now, a nice pair of S & K look really nice, in my opinion!

Brad HinnNow that my parts are polished I decided to cut my barrel to length and crown it. I started by cutting the excess off with a hack saw.
Then chucked it up in the lathe to cut the crown.
After that I lapped the crown with a brass lap to remove any burrs.
Here is the final result.

Mike_DettorreLuv it...a custom length
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.

tjrobertsyou sure are doing a nice job.
I am no craftsman what soever, (But i do play a decent guitar) But I thought that maybe you could get rid of the little gap in the bottom by adding a little bit of steel and filing it back down?
