new barrel for a VZ24
i have a VZ24(non-matching) that is in real good shape except the barrel is counterbored and rougher than a cob. as a future project i would like to restore it to "new" condition, including a new barrel, and make a nice shooter out of it. what i need to know is where to get a new barrel that is the same contour as the original VZ24 barrel.
i don't really want a take off barrel that may or may not be in new condition or may or may not have pipe wrench marks on it.(but this may be the route i'll have to take) i emailed lothar walther and they say that they have barrels contoured the same as the german 98 mausers for peolpe restoring a rifle. so now the question becomes, are the VZ 24 barrels and the german 98 mausers barrels contoured the same? i would like to use the original sights. the front sight on mine is the type that slips onto a "step" at the end of the barrel and then looks like part of the barrel. thanks for any help...bud

Good question. Maybe a bud's (or a bud's bud) might have one you could compare. Or maybe checkout www.milsurpshooter.net. Somebody there might be able to answer your question.

The only way to be sure is to measure, and get measurements from LW. However, another option would be to send the old bbl to someone like Pac-Nor and simply have them duplicate the contour.

Since we are on VZ24, is anyone familiar with an aftermarket 3 position safety available for this action?

Thanks

For what it is worth I was able to put a K98 in a VZ24 stock with no trouble. I had one that had been chopped up and would not hold a group. I decided to see if putting it in a military stock would help. It went in with a bit of inletting for the bent bolt and now shoots much better. So I would say yes a k98 barrel should work. You should find the screw for the rear sight is in the front of the VZ and the rear of the K98. I think that could be easy to fix though. I didn't need the rear sight as this rifle has a scope.

thanks for all the help. major cal...i've contacted lothar walther and they tell me they just have barrels contoured like the german 98 which i'm finding out, aren't the same contour as VZ24's. when the time comes for this project, i may just send the old one to pacnor and have it duplicated. thanks again to all...bud

I purchased a Perisan Mauser barreled action from SAMCO. It is in excellent condition.I had the barrel pulled, A action wrench and barrel vice was used. The barrel has no markes on it. The bore is in excellent condition. I will sell it very reasonable. I am using the action for a custom rifle project. Let me know if you are intersted.

Mausers are as good as it gets. The barrel shaping on your VZ-24 is called a "cannon profile". The VZ-24 is of the K variety, meaning short 23.5 inch barrel as opposed to the original 98 barrel of 29 inches.
Check out the Mauser sites online. Many have new 8X57 barrels that will be identical to yours except new.
PS despite what people say, have a gunsmith do the exchange and headspace your pretty....can save a lot of grief.
