I have looked at and puzzled over this picture time and again - only info I have is "Soviet Navy Sniper." Anyone have any idea of the era and what he is using? I don't think I have ever seen either the rifle - obviously semi-auto? - or the scope? Any ideas? Could it be a captured Stg-44? If so, what is the scope?
Hope someone knows more than I have been able to find.

That picture of the Soviet Naval sniper had me stymied so I posted the question on the collector's forum on gunboards where there are numerous Soviet weapons collectors.

They believe it is this weapon, the Mosin Nagant 91/30 PEM sniper.



"The large screw on the mount just appears to be a bolt of some automatic weapon. The sniper is a Soviet Naval rating named Antonov who was credited with over 300 kills."

And now we know.

Looks like my picture was the same system.

The rifle that the sniper has is a SVT38 or SVT40.

Gunner has it! An SVT, no doubt, No it's a PE 91/30. During the war anything was possible. TrapperP, I have seen that you have asked this, or been part of threads w/ this question before on other forums. Gunboards has the experts.

TrapperP is correct. It is not a SVT38/40. It looks like the bolt carrier handle but then the photo would have to be printed backwards as they didn't make any left handed SVTs. Also the bolt carrier handle was shaped differently. The photo obviously is not backwards from the scope as the windage is on the left side as it should be. If you look closely you can see the side mount. You can also see the rear sight of the 91/30.

I'm going to throw a little fly into the ointment. Is it actually a photograph, or artwork? in which case, anything is possible. The extremity of the shading would make me think so. The Soviets made some pretty creative propaganda posters and accuracy was not always a feature.

I think Grizzly Adams hit the nail on the head. While it may not be a painting or drawing, to me it IS at the least heavily airbrushed.

The rifle does not appear to be a 91/30, if so it's been airbrushed as to be unrecognizable.

As for being an SVT, no chance. Bolt handle is on the wrong side. Nobody else noticed that?

Look at the scope adjustment turrets. Did the Ruskies or anyone else make a scope with the windage on the left side of the tube?

Is the Cyrillic on the cap correct or is it reversed?

Read my last post; photo is not reversed as PU windage knob is on left side. Thus, since they didn't make any left handed SVTs that can't be the bolt carrier ("bolt handle") handle on the left side. It is a 91/30 as TrapperP stated.
