P-38
I posted this on gun collections and had TrapperP help me out with some info. A friend has this pistol, has no idea what its worth but would like any info that would help. He would like to trade for a long range rifle or for cash. P-38, serial #6960, 359 with the eagle over the number. I think it is an eagle. ac44, 9 mm. Number 3 on the front sight, and is in good shape. Thanks, Jeff

AC was the Nazi producer code assigned to Walther, the company that designed the P-38.

44 is the year of manufacture, 1944. I don't know if they were serially numbered by year. If not, the SN 6960 would seem pretty low, since they were in production for at leat five years prior to 1944. The eagle stamp ("Waffen Ampt", or "Ordnance Office" indicates that the pistol was inspected and accepted for use by the German military.

Checking out some of the auction sites to see what P-38's are selling for these days, it looks like they are ranging from $500.00 to over $700.00 depending on rarity and condition..

every year and for every pistol maker, the serial number restarted at 1, 10 000 pistols per batch hence "00001" to "10 000" then "a00001" to "a10 000" followed by "b 00001" and so on.

My P-38 is of a later date: ac 45 #1544. It is in 85% or better condition except the bluing on the front strap has wear. One magazine is original, the other a post war example. Fun to shoot and accurate, it is one of the loudest hand guns I own.

Wrong thread. When I saw the title I hoped you might be talking about one of these:

Imagine what that rare, recently discovered P-38 is worth!

I though it was an even more topic, concerning these:
