Bob MehaffeyRe: Trench shotguns
You're right Rick. They have them for $99.95. I have two original 97s (blue) and one 12 (parkerized) All three are missing the shroud and beyonet lug. I'll soon have them restored. Thanks

Bob MehaffeyI posted this last year with no luck so will try again. Anyone know where I can get the barrel shroud with beyonet lug fro a Model 12 and Model 97 Trench gun? Appreciate any help.

rick0311Numrich sells a pretty nice reproduction for about a hundred bucks...and I'll sell you a bayonet to fit it if you want one.

rick0311Well, that's close enough to a hundred bucks for me!
Some models of the Model 12, I think, also were issued with a wooden handguard instead of the metal shroud.
The whole idea of handguards on these things came about when some brilliant guy figured out that by the time someone would be needing the bayonet the barrel might be just a bit warm from emptying the magazine....Duh!
It's pretty hard to use the attached bayonet effectively without grabing a hold of that hot barrel.
One of the silliest things I ever read was some guy claiming the bayonets on these were used in trench warefare to "bat" hand grenades out of the trenches when the enemy threw them in...RIGHT!!!

Bob MehaffeyRick, What beyonet fits them? Is it the same for the 97 as for the 12. My 12 is parkerized so I'll have to send the shroud for it to someone to match the parkerizing. There's a model 12 on gunbroker starting at $1950. Some folks are proud of them.

rick0311Bob,
The model 97's and the model 12's had lugs to fit the 1917 Enfield bayonets with the 17" blades.
You can buy both originals (expensive) or repros(fairly cheap.)
I have two 1917 original's made by Remington and four original P17's also made by Remington. The only real difference is in the markings on the blade. They all have the Remington logo but the English ones don't have the "Flaming Bomb" ordnance stamp, nor the "US"... and they include a month and year of manufacture underneath "1913" where the US models just have "1917" over the Remington logo on one side and the flaming bomb and US on the other.
I also have an original Remington P17 bayonet that has the English marks slashed over (with seven punch lines) and "US" stamped on. Remington did this for issue to the USA on the ones they already had made up but had never shipped to England.

Bob MehaffeyInteresting Rick, Were you serious when you said you would sell me one? (If my wife don't divorce me for having so many rifle projects going) I probably can't afford an original but what do they go for?

rick0311Bob,
You can also find these for sale at a bunch of different places in the Shotgun News. Numrich (where you bought your handguard) sells repros...and several other places sell the P17 Remingtons for pretty reasonable prices (about $70 bucks.)
If you can't find one you like email me and I would be happy to sell you one of the P17's...but not the original M1917 Remington ones.

Bob MehaffeyOK Rick, Thanks. I never pay any attention to those ads in Shotgun News but since I've acquired this interest in military stuff I'll check em out.
