msorensoAR-15 questions
Looking at a colt sp-1 with triangular hand guard. It doesn't have forward assist just curious what years could this one be made? Wasn't sure when the forward assist first came out. Thanks

DuckearThe SP1 was made from 1964-1985
try biggerhammer.net/ar15/ar15serial.html for year of manufacture by serial number.

homebrewerIf you buy it, get one of those quick-release pushpins from Brownells. It replaces the double screw and makes separating the halves much easier. About fifteen bucks and so worth it...

N E 450 No2My first AR work gun was a Colt SP1 type.
I say type, as it was one of the original fully auto AR 15's and so marked.
I hated the triangular handguards, and replaced them with a round set that fit the standard front triangular metal piece at the front sight.
I think the AR handles much better with the round handguard.

Me, too. I'm sure they went to the round because the two halves are identical. Just one part to inventory...
