BaxterBU.S.G.S - Army or???
I have an 1897 SAA with "Cap.t U.S.G.S Co. I Cav" stamped under the barrel.
What is U.S.G.S ??? I cannot find a good reference as to what this stands for. I know modern usage is the geological survey, but in 1880s???
Help a brother out...

BaxterBNo. His name is stamped on the back strap of the pistol. My dad thought “United States Government Scouts”. Dunno...
The US Geological Survey originated in the 1880s. Plenty of time for your revolver to be involved, if it was.
