U.S.G.S - Army or???
I have an 1897 SAA with "Cap.t U.S.G.S Co. I Cav" stamped under the barrel.

What is U.S.G.S ??? I cannot find a good reference as to what this stands for. I know modern usage is the geological survey, but in 1880s???

Help a brother out...

Maybe initials?

What force or guile could not subdue,
Thro' many warlike ages,
Is wrought now by a coward few,
For hireling traitor's wages.

The US Geological Survey originated in the 1880s. Plenty of time for your revolver to be involved, if it was.
