don't do this to your Krag
My wife, daughter, son-in-law, and myself went to the back 200 acres to put out a hog trap. I took along my Krag with 5 rounds in the magazine. One of which I expended on a coyote on entering the pasture. As we were leaving we came on two hogs in the road. My son-in-law put us in pursuit in his jacked-up 4x4 across the pasture. I got myself half out the truck via the window and shot my remaining 4 rounds at the pigs. It was impossible to aim, but I did hit one hog twice and it quickly died. My son-in-law hit the remaining hog with the truck, breaking a back leg and possible hip. I bailed out of the vehicle but did not know what to do to put this hog out of it's misry. I ended up hitting the hog over the head with my rifle stock braking it off at the wrist. The hog unphased attempted to get at me. My son-in-law got behind it and grabbed it by the back legs and pulled it down. He finished it off with his 4" (blade) pocket-knife by stabbing it and cutting it's throat. I was heart broken though with the broken stock on my long awaited Krag. A few days later I glued, screwed, and puttied it back together. It's sound now, doesn't look too bad, but I will definitely treat it with more respect in the future.

Yeah,it was. I'm gonna bring the mauser next time,it is much thicker in the wrist than the krag. Just kidding, the moral of this story is to bring enough bullets!

Well...a bad day on the farm is always better than a good day at the office IMHO.

And besides, the stock can always be replaced.

I appreciate the responses, especially the link for the new stock, though I'm going with the repair for now, as I do want to use the gun as a general knock-around gun, just not as a club in the future. This Krag I believe is a Banner cut-down, and not orginal. It makes a great knock-around, but alas has no provision for the attachment of a bayonet. KSTEPHENS, I'd left all my explosive arrows and handgreandes in the shed, will do better next time.

typical.
to use the buttstock correctly you jab it forward. you dont swing it like a golf club, tiger.

every time i go groundhog hunting and don't have a pistol i need it. everytime i have it i don't need it. sounds like one of the few instances i can think of where you would have been better off with a weatherby stocked rifle.

does this rifle truly qualify for the euphemism "beater"?

Sorry, just couldn't resist.
