Gents, I just purchased several hundred rounds of SSA 7.62x51 ammo in steel links. What's the best way to get cartridge out and are the links worth anything to anyone? Thanks!

I'm betting that you don't have enough ammo to warrent the expense of a delinker.
Having never done it, here's my SWAG. Find a pipe of proper diameter, one that fits on the link not the case. See if you push them thru. Find another piece of pipe that fits on the shoulder of the case as a pusher.

much quicker than doing one at a time with some improvised method.

I have about the same amount in links I just keep them that way in Case I own a LMG some day.

Get a pair of heavy leather gloves.

Depending on the style of the links, it will be easier to push the cartridges through the links or pull then through the links.

If you have several thousand rounds to de link, then you might make a "de linker" of your own, using two boards, with a hinge and some nails to hold the links while other nails push on the back of the cartridges, forcing them through the links.

I made one once upon a time, it would delink 5 cartridges at a time.

Because of the current school/gun scare mentality here in the USA I do not think I would use my kids to de link any ammo, here is why.

I can see them going to school with a few cuts on their hands from doing the job.

When the teacher asks" How did you hurt your hands".. And the kid replies "MY DADDY HAD ME DELINKING MACHING GUN AMMO"

That is a rare place in todays world.

When I was in College I had a Chemistry Professor that was also a shooter/hunter.

I was in a conference with him in his office one day, planning future courses, when I saw a 264 Win Mag loaded round on his book case.
I asked him if he shot a 264, he said yes and asked what I knew about one. I replied that I has a Pre 64 Winchester Westerner, 26" stainless barrel and all.

He asked what do you clean it with? This was in the early 1970's, I replied Hoppes.

He said you know they took all the good stuff out of it, [I was a biology chemistry double major], and said yes I do.

He then proceded to give me a gallon jug of some Hoppes, with "all the good stuff back in it".

He was a good professor, I took his Organic Chemistry class twice, a couple of years apart, still only got a B both times, but I NEVER ran out of the "Good Hoppes".

I also managed to get a key to the supply lab, where I could order all the ethyl alcohol, and dry ice I needed for my "projects"...

I remember my professor coming into the lab with his pale colored bottle of Coke.

We would take the EA [Ethyl Alcohol] and the dry ice and mix it in a trashcan with welchade {sp} grape juice and make Purple Passion.

Personally, I find an M60 makes a very effective delinker.



Otherwise the suggestion of making your own is a good one.
