I have a U.S. 1903/A3 7.62X51 (.308)(Remington Mfg.) I'm trying or rather need as a matter of rules to keep the rifle "vintage" and "as issued) period vintage to comply with the new "vintage sniper" rules at Camp Perry. I know the Weaver C03 2.5X is period and "as issued" equipment but I am unsure of the original "as issued" mount. The one in the picture below was given to me and described as being the proper mount. I have seen similar mounts like this but I'm not sure it's the type that was issued. If it is, it is obvious that the side of the receiver will require drilling and tapping which provides another concern in that; this is the bolt slide area and the metal is only 1/16 to perhaps 1/8" thick where the screws could not pass without interfering with the operation of the bolt. It is doubtful that there is enough material here to secure the mount adding further doubts as to if this mount is correct. Anyway, any help in determining the correct mount "as issued" for my rifle is appreciated"

The mount pictured is incorrect.They used a one piece redfield base for the 1903a4 rifle.Check out the link,it shows the correct mount.

If the chambering of your 1903/A3 is indeed 7.62 x 51 it's no way, not even, as issued.

Thanks, you confirmed what I thought. Of course the bummer is I still have to tap the receiver but since it's original eqpt., I guess I could assume it won't devalue the originality..?

I completely agree as to the caliber issue. No M1903/A3/A4 rifles were manufactured after 1945, so how could one be other than .30-06 caliber?

Just remembered there was an attempted homicice using a 308 win in a 30:06... Produced an interesting straight walled case with tapered mouth as I remember some thirty years ago.
