45nutBringing home my 1st Krag.
Gents,
Going out to my 'smith's tommorrow to bring home another rifle....1898 Krag, mild sporter job,,ie: barrel cut down, handguards missing, stock cut, smith say's the bore is mirror bright though.
Should be a great shooter,,,$175.00
Am I setting my self up for another fetish ?
Already a Enfield nut,contender junkie,lever action afflicted,1911 afficinado,wheelgun fanatic.
Where does it end? After I get my 500A2 I have already commisioned a 17....

<.>Mausers are cheap, ammo is cheap and the 8mm is a damn powerful caliber. 155 gr. bullet and 2965 fps.
Garand is something every boy should own.
Have a look at the Makarov.
Traded my Mosin M-44 for a bayonet, but I think a 91/30 with octagonal receiver, or a M-38 . . .
Get an AK-47 "clone" for sure, for sure.
I want a Rockola M1 Carbine. Stay back off those until I get mine. Then your turn.
Ask the wife if she has all the shoes she needs. That seems to be an effective argument. *LOL*

CZ 550You will never find an action as slick as the Krag's. Be prepared for an addiction worse than cigarettes, women and crack.

<Axel>Have fun getting the bolt in and out. I think the latter operation is worse than the former.

45nutAxel,
My 'smith was kind enough to show me once, then I did it in front of him,got the bolt in & out in one try. Mechanical devices all seem to have a trick, the trick is to find it or have it shown to you. 45nut

<Axel>No matter how you look at it though, the bolt removal/installation isn't nearly as easy on a Krag as a Mauser! Personally, I think they are harder to install than remove. Real pain in the ass with a Williams receiver sight.
Other than the bolt, I think they are great rifles. A gentleman I know had one, which was rebarreled and chambered for the 35 Winchester. Great woods rifle and slicker than goose crap.

<eldeguello>Once you have your U.S. Krag, I recommend getting a Norwegian one also!!!

<Axel>Wildcat,
The amount of force needed to lift the extractor on the Krags I have messed around with was FAR greater than the force needed to pull the bolt release lever on a Mauser! Not to mention that the extractor on the Krag is a bit harder on the finger tip than the Mausers lever.
If your Krag has been highly polished and rust blued, the reinstallation process of the bolt will screw up you bluing as there is a considerable amount of sliding going on between the extractor lever and the right hand side of the rear receiver ring in the immediate vicinity of the lug slot. Been there done that. I assume the military finish holds up a bit better.
They are slick rifles and if I ever find a nice one for a reasonable price I may pick it up and rebarrel to 35 Winchester. Now that is a woods rifle par excellence!

franke45Nut,
You will probably find the Krag will cure your need for buying more guns.
But now,you have another problem.You've developed a craving for more bullets,and primers,and gunpowder,and brass,and,etc.Eventually,you will need a lead melting pot,and molds,and----.
I wish you luck,
Frank

45nutFrank,
Sorry to let you down, but I fell victim again last night to my Enfield addiction. A no4 was calling me with the siren song of Lithgow made arms. $75 bucks and my 1st gun of the year made a home in my bursting Enfield cabinet.
Oh by the way...I have been casting my own for 6 years, collecting moulds for 8,hoarding powder and primers since 85. A bonafide machined steel and carved wood junkie
