Never heard of an "M12" - would like to know what it is also. The only weapons I personally ever saw the SEALs use for sniper work were the mdified M14 - like what became the XM21/M21 - and the bolt rifles in 300 WinMag.
Their website shows they currently deploy the following sniper weapons:
SNIPER WEAPONS
Rifle M14 sniper kit, sniper rifle
Rifle N91 RH/LH, 7.62mm bolt gun, sniper rifle
Rifle 300 WINMAG bolt gun, sniper rifle
Rifle M88 .50 PIP, bolt gun, magazine fed, sniper rifle
This was copied from
http://www.specialoperations.com/Navy/SEALs/Weapons.htmThe SEAL's have always operated with a great deal of equipment that was not 'official' but worked - anyone recall the Stoner LMG? or the little Swedish "K"?
I know a couple or three old Navy SEAL's I will ask but they're like me, so old we can remember when airplanes flew with propellers!
Lord, give me patience 'cuz if you give me strength I'll need bail money!!

Got any idea what it's based on?
Looks like it could a M-16 variant or is it an AR-10.

It's an M-16 receiver 5.56x45mm variant. I think they were turned out by Knight Armament Company aka Knight's Manufacturing Company (makers of the SR-25 Mark 11 Mod. 0) ,,,,, but I couldn't swear to that. I know that the trigger units were made by KAC.

You 'know' eh
Why not just post the link instead of editing the information into
"I know the trigger units were made by KAC?"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy_Mark_12...pecial_Purpose_Riflequote:

Yes! I know (and knew it before I posted the Wiki Pic)...... because it's the same trigger that's on my SR-25!

JordanI was curious because the weapon is mentioned in the book "Sole Survivor" and I wanted to know what armament those four SEALS had when an army of Taliban descended upon them. Thanks DaMan. Do you know anything else about the rifle?

Rick RI believe they're kind of a special production semi custom medium range precision suppressed rifle. Designed for making good terrorist's out of baduns.

The article in Wikipedia seems pretty correct.

This info is for the Mk 12
Mod 0 only:
Barrel is an 18" Douglas with 1-7" twist (probably a National Match type contour without the M203 cut).
The
muzzle break and
suppressor a made by OPS, Inc.
The
Precision Reflex, Inc. Gen III Free-float forearm and the
ARMS #38 SPR PEQ-2-3 swan sleeve are used.
Iron sights are the
PRI flip-up front and the
ARMS 40 flip up rear sight.
The scope on the Mk 12 Mod 0 is a TS-30/A2 (made by Leopold). They're similar to the civilian
Leopold Mark 4 MR/T.
They use the
Tenebraex killFLASH anti-reflexion device on the scope above.
And, as I said before, they use

Nothing said about it, but I wonder if the Mark 12 uses the new and improved gas piston set up? I think this was one developed by HK for retrofit on any M4 but which has mostly been retofitted to spec ops weapons. Not sure how it works, but it is supposed to keep gas and carbon out of the bolt and to greatly extend the number of rounds between cleaning of the M4. I would be very surpised if the SEALS did not have this upgrade, but I've not been able to find anything about it. Any info on this for the Mark 12?
Thanks,
Jordan

China Fleet SailorIf you're really curious, why don't you contact someone at the
Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane, Indiana. They build the rifles.
As it says on their small arms page:
quote:
All Navy small arms are secured and accounted for by NSWC Crane.
All Navy overhauled small arms are certified, sighted, and test fired by NSWC Crane.

Jordan the Mk. 12s used the old style standard M-16 direct gas impingement (no piston/op rod).
The
HK416seems to be the new guy on the block.
Check this out! I think you'll find it interesting.

JordanYeah...HK 416. That's the one.

All our troops ought to have that. I read an article on it awhile back in Army Times. Far, far superior to the direct impingement M4. Impressive video.
