Temporary export permits
Anyone complete a temporary export permit in the last year since the end of the registry? They ask for registration certificate but since we don't have these anymore I was wondering if it was like a few years ago when the green Y38 form sufficed for proof of ownership.

Thanks,

If you have that much to fight for, then you should be fighting. The sentiment that modern day ordinary Canadians do not need firearms for protection is pleasant but unrealistic. To discourage responsible deserving Canadians from possessing firearms for lawful self-defence and other legitimate purposes is to risk sacrificing them at the altar of political correctness."

The temporary export form is your proof of ownership...just ignore the registration number request. Nothing else required.

Yeah I am afraid of that. I just have major issues with giving a fed gov't what amounts to registration info after we finally got rid of registration system. I am debating the Y38 form as that at least proves Canadian ownership and isn't in control of the gov't but in my control.

If you are travelling anywhere but the USA you need a temporary export permit.

Last time I was dealing with export paperwork I dealt with Paul Galevais at DFAIT. He doesn't appear on the Government Employee Directory System so he must be gone. Not sure who is the point of contact over there now.

Paulette is great. She helped me get my permits in August. Funny thing is I almost didn't bother as last time I never got checked. From what a lot of my friends have said they never got checked either. On the way home this time they checked and boy was I glad I went through the hassle or it would have been an interesting rodeo.

The law says you need one but it is surprising how many CBSA agents don't know the law.

Surprisingly the number of hunters that don't know you need one either. I didn't the first time I went and got lucky. I think the agents are catching on and are on top of it now and wouldn't hink of going without it now.

Don't forget that not only do you need a temporary export for your rifle but you also need one for any rifle scope over 4X and your ammo. The rifle permits come pretty fast it seems but the scope and ammo seem a lot slower.

Two forms to fill out. Its free.
Proof of ownership is not the issue.
International trade in small arms and treaty agreements with the US are the reason.

Happy hunting.

Did both come that fast or just the rifle one? Seems it comes way faster than the scope/ammo one. Not certain why.

As usual, the CBSA agent didn't have a clue what the temporary export permit was on our return. You think that government departments would talk to each other. He was very cordial and after I explained what it was and where he had to sign, he happily obliged. And they expect that average Canadian firearm owner to know all the laws when those responsible for them don't.

Got my permit for my rifle within a week of submitting in April. Sylvie did it and I thanked her for the fast service.

My scope and ammo permit took 6 weeks, including 2 emails and a "what the hell is going on?" phone call on the last day. Paul Galevais was responsible for that.

Oh, Paul's back. He was good when I dealt with him in 2007 but he was a bit obstinate in 2010. How's 2013 shaping up I wonder?
