Shootaway, I'm heading up to the La Grand Hydro area the week before Thanksgiving. I'm living and working in South Carolina right know so I'm going to drive up to PA to meet with a friend who set up the hunt and ride up with him and several other hunters. Do you have a hunt booked?

Shootaway, We're hunting out of Kiskamastakin (sp?), it's up the road from Nouchimi and across the dam. I know Nouchimi has out post camps in the same area. It was as close as we could get to the herd last year. Who knows where they'll be this year.

clem, you are talking to someone who drove it 11 times. It is a hell of a stressful drive, hours and hours of driving over 100km/hr on ice.

Sounds like it's not your 1st winter hunt. We went up last year & the caribou not there. We went Thanksgiving week---they came across the week after we left. I would check out the satellite reports on the herd to make sure they were there. It's a long, long, long drive. Good luck-----we are planning on going back in 07. CB

Bob,what I would do if they are not there is try to get a guide to take you to them,if they are way out of reach then try to get a helicopter service from Mirage. If neither works then drive up to Radisson when your stay expires and there is no place at your outfitter, book a motel room(60$a night) and stay there a week or until you get word from your outfitter that they arrived. Then one drive down to 22a should fill all your tags.Radisson is really nice, but that all depends if you are willing to stay an extra week.I strongly advice you to keep a spare week in your hunting plan in case they are not there. You can't afford to spend so much energy and money and return empty handed.

How do you check out satellite reports for caribou? I could use that.

shootway-----I understand what you are saying but the boss only gives you some much vaction time. Mirage was the only ones getting caribou & it was with the helicopter. It was booked up & they were turning their own hunters down because of limited space. They were taking some good bulls last year---lots of mass. Maybe next year. CB

Colorado, how true.I believe it beats any hunt in the world.A genuine wilderness north american experience for a good price.I feel like returning more than ever.It may do me some good as i am bored to the point of wanting to sit down and always do nothing.A good long drive up there may rekindle my spirits.Heck i may even fly up there if i go alone, because i will just end up giving the meat away.I would like to bring back a nice rack.

Kamo Gari, are you warning me about the outfitter, or the north woods?

I'd like to see that answer myself. Confused

I much prefer the road less taken.

I decided to dish out the big bucks and fly there and rent a vehicule.I called my father up and asked him if he wanted to come along. He has been my only hunting partner so far and it seems we are going to put up with one another for a week or so.I have booked for the 17th-23rd of november.I will post pictures of our hunt when I get back.I would like to thank a couple of people on this site for considering going with me,that is BD and the person who sent me an email.
