I have killed several black bears, only one with a 308 and it worked great.

I used the Federal factory load with the 180gr Woodleigh bullet.
One shot at 20 yards, complete penetration, the spun and ran a short distance, died and slid down the hill.

I think any good bullet from 165gr to 180gr would be fine. Say a Nosler Partition, TBBC, NorthFork, or a Woodleigh.

A Woodleigh bullet would be about perfect. It worked great for me.

My daughter took an Alaskan Black Bear quite effectively with a 165gr TSX. One shot, DRT.

The 308 is a perfect calibre for b bear. any bullet works well if hit right. A premium bullet is reccomended for a better chance at a pass through any have an easier tracking job if needed. Test a couple and see what shoots best in your gun stay above 165 grains I would also reccomend.

I killed my one and only Black bear with a 180 grain Swift Scirocco out of my 308. 45 yard shot, pass through which broke offside shoulder. 200 lb. bear was dead within 25 yards.

I took a black bear with a factory loaded 165gr Sierra Game King (Federal). 75m shot, in the ribs out through the offside shoulder, the bear jumped one meter from where he stood and that was it.

Buy premium ammo in 150 thru 180grs. and if he can shoot he will take down a bear.

Our Blackies are not hard to kill.
My brother took a bunch of them using his Mod-88 in 308. Most were 150gr bullets.
I advocate a good bullet like the Nosler pt. in 150 or 165 gr thru the heart or lungs (or both) and he's in the bag.

Personally my last Blackie was drt with my 7mm rem mag and 150 gr bullet.
