Black ghost squirrel
About a month ago my dad was driving home and he saw a squirrel run across the driveway and it looked strangely dark. He told me he saw a black squirrel. They are not common to here in western Canada, and I actually heard they escaped from a zoo. So I grabbed my 22 and headed out to find it. And when I was in the woods I saw the black squirrel. It was oddly fat and unusually smart. I spotted it in my scope but it quickly jumped from another tree. A pine squirrel (which are common to here) finally scared it off.

Lots around Calgary...they are just a black variation of the gray squirrel.

here we can't shoot them because they are a minority, but they do demand equal nuts

Here in San Angelo Texas we have lots of black squirrels. They burrow, pretty sure they make their nest underground and not in trees as the other ones do. They are more aggressive. I've heard they are not good to eat.

oh that is good to know. Thank you, because I'm interested in black squirrels. I have always wanted a black squirrel because I think it would be a cool skin to have.

You might want to check on the legalities of shooting them where you live.

@sheephunterab Are you sure you are not thinking of red squirrels? because they are illegal to shoot but the black ones are ferrel and not fur bearing.

Actually in Alberta red squirrels are fair game on private land but I honestly don't know where greys fit in....wouldn't hurt to check it out.
