When I was younger it was rare to hear a Canadian tooting our horn. It's nice to see that has changed.

Sorry, it's Canada Day, but thanks for the sentiment. Dominion Day sounded too "British" and implied Anglo superiority to those fucking Quebeckers, according to our politicians, so they changed it, quite a while ago.

Actually, it was a native-born Canadian and "Father of Confederation", Sir Samuel Tilley, who first proposed the name, "Dominion Day" and that is the traditional and correct term for July 1st. in Canada, among real Canadians.

It, was changed by the same loser who initiated our current "gun control" situation, P.E.T. and his name "Canada Day" was intended to obtain votes from the "instant citizens" his changes to Canadian citizenship requirements made possible. I find it a bit ironic for anyone from Alberta, to support this change, in view of Trudeau's "National Energy Policy", but, perhaps there are more of "PET's" type in "Wild Rose Country" than is immediately apparent, eh.

Actualy I would not bet on it you have Vancouver so vote count for PET type might swing your way. I don't personaly know of anyone who likes PET or anything that he brought in here. Lets be honest here Canada day or Dominion day are both ment for celebrating Canada first and formost, it is not ment to belittle anything. What is a real Canadian Dewy?

I came here with my parents from New Zealand when I was six years old. Our family went through all the procedures to legaly get our Canadian citizenship. I went to school with all my friends from around the area 99.9% of them were born here they never treated me any different, I was just one of the guys. I have now been here for 34 years, And have three kids who are now 8 are they Canadian or half Canadians? If you heard my Dad talk he would have a New Zealand Axcent but you would judging by some of your posts would get along with him really well but is he Canadian?

We do have some pretty piss poor immigration laws, there is no question about that. There definatly needs change.

1. Being able to speak one of the offical languages before you come here.
2. Have a definate skill - trade of some sort or degree of some sort with a job already lined up at the time you get here.
3. After you have been here for 2 years prove that you still have legitimate job and can speak english or if you have to French.
4. If you commit a crime while you are in Canada and not yet a citizen, back to your country of origin. Never to return
5. If you arrive in Canada in a shipping container back you go.

I have always felt no matter what religon, race or whatever to be here you have to be canadian first. None of this Afro canadian, chinese Canadian, indian Canadian,white Canadian, Christian Canadian, Muslim Canadian. Either you are a Canadian first or your not and you had better be prepared and willing to protect, fight and defend Canadian rights both at home and abroad.

Anyway to all, have a happy Dominion day Canada day. And I hope people realize how lucky we are to be living in the great country.

Actually, the name change to Canada Day was proposed by a french Canadian shortly after WWII, but it was shot down by the senate after the bill passed.

Dominion Day is not Canada specific, it refers to any Commonwealth country.

I guess since we have royalty visiting, we should use the monarchally correct term........jolly good.

No, that is not correct, the name was suggested by Tilley in lieu of the original term for the new country, "The Kingdom of Canada". This, was done as some politicians here and bureaucrats in 'The Colonial Office" in Britain, were concerned that the Americans, with their large army, immediately post-"Civil War" would object to a "Kingdom" on their northern border and might cause trouble.

Britain, at that time, was just out of the bloody victories in "The Crimea" and "The Sepoy Mutiny" in dear old Injah, wot, wot, and really did not want to antagonize the aggressive Yankees, who were their largest trading partners, (follow the money, then, just as now) and so were eager to have a quiescent and relatively powerless Dominion in North America.

The term DID become the one used for other colonies emerging into nations, "Oz", "Kiwi" and, eventually, South Africa, but, this was Tilley's term and the proper one for our national birthday.

Of course, P.E.T. hated it as he hated anything "English" and Canada, is the worse for his odious little existence as most of us know only too well.

You are correct about the "Canada Day" proposal post-WWII, 1946, I think, but, it should never have been changed and should be returned to "Dominion Day" AND our anthem should not have been changed to suit every "multiculti" whiner who demanded it.

In fact, Canada's anthem should be "The Maple Leaf Forever" and played by a military pipe band....if the froggies don't like it, well, let's have a rematch of "the Plains of Abraham" and this time, we will finish the job!!!
