Spring Grizzly hunt in BC
I got the info from a guy up in Mc Leod Lake area. The are we will be hunting is around the Parsnip and up on the Anzac. Is that elevation high enough to get snow. Thanks Royce

Don't worry too much, bears gotta eat! A retired outfitter friend and I were talking today. It'll happen, we use to get way more snow and bear were still shot in May.
Last of May and early June the sow's are getting into heat. The bruins get more frisky and are out more.

I agree with .366. The snowpack really only seems to affect the early season in a significant way....a low snow year or real warm spring will bring them out quicker. By mid to late May, most of them will be out regardless. For G-bears I prefer last week of May/early June as you can count on them being out by then due to the breeding season.

NOTE: my rec is for mountainous country, where we don't typically hunt by the rivers...this is alpine/avalanche track spot and stalk hunting. Earlier may be better in other areas.

Cheers,
Canuck

I was just talking to a buddy that has a grizz draw for 7-23 region A, I think. He is going to give it a try this weekend or next weekend, I am guessing that this is right around the area that you will be hunting. I may go out with him for the May long weekend. This should be just before you go out. I will let you know how things are looking, hopefully I can take some pics in the next few weeks. Don't worry this will be a good year and you will see a lot of bears. I am hoping to put my new 700 grizzly quad and .450 marlin to work on bears in the next two weeks or so.

Schmaus, It is Monday evening give it up, anything happen this weekend? Royce

It wasn't a good weekend for me there is still too much snow for my quad to make it anywhere that I wanted to go. I will try and talk to my buddy and find out how they made out last weekend. I know they are planning a big trip on may long weekend (three weeks from now) I think everything should be good by then.

Dammit still too much snow I tried to take my bike out yesterday and there is still three feet of snow on the road. Hopefully next weekend should be good

Schmaus, "This" weekend has come and gone and it is almost here again, where is the report? Got your bear yet? Royce

Ok ok easy now Big Grin

I went out on friday right after work we still couldn't get the trucks very far on the roads that weren't plowed, but at least this weekend the bikes could make it around a little. I seen a couple of black bears nothing crazy a couple of moose and lots of tracks and poop. Everything is starting to line up and hopefully the snow is gone here in a bit and my mobility will get better so I can go where I really wanna go. Bottom line I think you will still be right on time and have a good hunt.

Almost forgot to ask, how are the bugs this time of year? Royce

I think that we should have maybe one more weekend without too many bugs and then it will be hell for the summer. Mosquitoes and black flies will be biting the heck out of yah.

Any bears yet? I keep hearing that old man winter keeps hangin on up there in the high country.

Yah she's a little behind schedule this year. To give you an idea if you can find these on a map Tacheeta and Carp Lake were still froze over this weekend. I can't believe how much snow there is still laying around. The bears are ripping around but its just hard to get around and look for them.

What I want to know is do I rent four wheelers or snowmobiles for the hunt? Royce
22 May 2007, 08:20
Canuck
That's easy...you can't hunt big game (basically other than wolves, cougars and Bison) with the use of snowmobiles. Most areas are closed to hunting from snowmobiles from April 1 to Nov 30. ADDED: It is a regional restriction and there are exceptions, so check with your outfitter.

The snow is late down here in the Kootenay's too, but there are lots of bears out. Was talking to a local taxidermist and he has had a pretty good start to the season.

Cheers

Only about 30 times! (ie. I apply for a spring hunt every year and the fall hunt most years) I did put in for a fall draw up north this year, but not sure if I'll be able to use it if I get one. Holidays are tight this year.

The g-bears have been safe from me, except for the one year I applied for a high percentage draw in a fly-in MU and got it. No luck on that hunt.

If I ever manage to get a draw for the Kootenays, I have promised that particular dance to my 416T (although I may reneg if I can get my hands on a 375 Ruger!).

Cheers,
Canuck

Royce,

Just to get you wound up some more.....A friend of mine e-mailed this picture this AM. He and another friend (the guy in the picture) had some luck this weekend, and tagged a nice boar...7' 6" square...they were hunting in the West Kootenays in southern BC....

Canuck

.366,

These guys are real good hunters, AND they have horseshoes up their a55 too. Smiler They are the luckiest guys I know! The hunting success isn't the lucky part (they put in a tonne of effort, believe me)...its all the friggin LEHs they manage to get. Here is the other guy with a g-bear from 3 years ago...

In '99 they drew tags for Dall's in the Tatshenshini and I went on a Stone sheep hunt. I shot that hog of a stone (46"s) and figured I finally had a story that would beat theirs. Turned out they both tagged a nice dall AND they discovered the "ice man" in a glacier!!!!!!

Cheers,
Canuck

I want one! CRYBABY

I was sorely tempted when I received a discounted hunt offer a few weeks ago, but "luckily" the cash that would have paid for it is still tied up... but if I get an offer like that next year... it's not like the AB grizz hunt will open any time soon, and with something like 2 or 3 priorities I'll be dead before I draw.

Me too. Smiler

A good friend of mine sent me this pic of a g-bear he and another buddy shot last week. They are both houndsmen and got it with their dogs. They had to wade in to the fray where it was bayed up and shot it at 30'. Big Grin It tapes 7' 9" nose to tail and 8' 3" paw to paw, for an honest 8' square.
