I have to jump in on this one. The trophy fees may go to the 'guide/outfitter' but not much trickles down to the 'assistant guide' who is actually in the hills. Some outfiters are paying sheep guides on a higher daily pay rate, without bonuses, to try to ensure the harvest of older, quality trophies instead of just taking the first legal ram. This can be frustrating for the clients at times, but is better for the sheep populations, in the long run. This may make for a longer term hunt, but thats why they are two weeks long. Everyone works harder, and hopefully the end results are worthwhile.
Good luck, all.

Yes, the trophy fees are paid to the outfitter, not the individual guide. I wasn't very clear on that

Good point about finding the older animal, rather than shooting the first thing that wanders by. I suppose that could work as an ANTI- incentive...Shoot that one! Boom!

Okay, you owe me $2000 for that dink

Can anyone here recommend a reputable guide for a moose hunt in the Yukon for this year?

I have been hunting in B.C. for the last several seasons, and I would love to see some new country.

Thanks,
Garrett

I hunted the Yukon with Ceaser Lake Outfitters in October of 2003. I would highly recommend them - excellent outfitter with great guides and equipment. I would say the moose they take average in the 55" range. Any questions drop me a note.

I posted this announcement on the big game forum not long ago. I would have to call the outfitter to see if the spot is still open.

"Only one opening left in the Yukon for this Fall! The outfitter is offering the 11 day hunt in some of the most amazing country on the planet for $9400 plus a $4900 trophy

fee if you decide to take a griz. Anyone interested should contact me ASAP at john_salevurakis@hotmail.com . This hunt area will blow your minds my friends!"

Best,

Garret,

How would you prefer to hunt moose here?

By boat, on horse back, or back pack?

Bullshit!!! A $4900 trophy fee? What law says that? There's no mention of a $4900 trophy fee on the Yukon goverment's web page. John, this is fraud. Plain and simple. Yes, I understand you're just repeating what you were told. No reflection on you.

Dan Reynolds outfitting and Jim Fink's Blackstone outfitters get some great moose. Dan doesn't have a web site but Jim does and it is pretty impressive. You can find out about most of the outfitters in the Yukon by checking out the Yukon outfitters website.

I hunted sheep with Jim Fink of Blackstone outfitters two years ago. I got a great sheep, scored 165 4/8 and had a great trip. Jim runs a first class operation. He has airplanes and horses and boats. His area has sheep (both Dall and Fannin), moose, caribou, black and grizzly bears and wolves. Here is a link

You will not go wrong if you go with him

Sunray,

Not trying to start a flame war here but this is NOT a government fee and everyone knows this. Try booking separate Moose and Yukon Grizzly hunts with any outfitter in the Territory and its a guaranteee that one will pay A LOT more than the combined price on this outing.

The trophy fee is paid to the outfitter, not the gov't.

Basically, you pay X amount of dollars to HUNT, and X amount of dollars if you KILL.

I actually think it isn't a bad idea, as it gives the guide more incentive to do his job, becasue if nothing is shot, they get less money.

It's just my take on it, and others may have different, better informed opinions...

I cannot say about the Yukon, but, here in B.C., Gatehouse's point is correct. If, you book a hunt with a Guide-Outfitter, you pay a certain price for the hunt itself, which usually includes one animal. Then, you pay an additional fee to him/her for every other animal you harvest; individual outfitters have different methods of calculating this, but, this is how it works.

The point about guides is well taken, I have seen some that were less "enthusiastic" than others.
