Air Canada and ammunition
This is quote from their web site:

"Ammunition must be packed in a separate, secure and strong container made of plastic, wood or metal."

Does "secure" here mean separate lockable case like in South Africa? (i.e Pelican case)

or

Can I use my MTM slide top ammo boxes in my checked lugged without the Pelican case?

thanks,

Ask 3 different employees at AC. Print out answer that’s best for you. As I’ve said in past, I’d walk before taking AC again.

No it doesn't have to be lockable but I'd suggest it is. A pistol case hold three boxes nicely, is lockable and can be taken out out of your baggage and shipped separately if requested by another airline.

It doesn't have to be lockable. You need trigger locks on your guns though.

In April and May this year I flew Air Canada from Vancouver to Terrace and return with a rifle. Rifle was in it's lockable case but both the bolt and ammo I stowed separately in my check in bag. Ammo was in 2 x MTM Case Gard 20 round, slip top containers. I just used rubber bands to keep the the lids secure. The rifle had a trigger lock installed. I had no issues at all. When asked I informed the check in counter staff my ammo was in the check in bag. Rifle case and bag were Xrayed at both Vancouver and Terrace - all good !
As you know Air Canada publishes their firearms and ammo carriage policy. Like you I have read the info on their website. On several flights with Air Canada I have yet to encounter check in staff who are familiar with the policy. There is usually quite a bit of computer screen scrutiny and a phone call or two to someone who supposedly knows the procedure. It takes a while but eventually gets sorted with luggage checked in. You will have to detail and sign a standard form. One copy goes into the rifle case, another copy into the bag containing the ammo. I think you give one copy to the security guys. They also sting you CAD $50.00 for processing your firearm. I have never had luggage not arrive or go astray. I recommend arriving early for check in, being prepared for a bit of time at the counter, taking a print out of Air Canada's info with you and at all times keeping your good manners and humour to the fore. It's frustrating but they get there in the end.

chronic,

Be safe. Put your ammo in a locked box as you would for RSA. That is what I recommend to my Canadian clients. Do remember to use the clam shell type trigger locks.

If I take Air Canada, it is because I didn't have any other choice. I alwats suggest to my clients that they take another airline if possible. Sad, but Air Canada is a PITA to deal with.

I must have the best luck in the world because I never have trouble with Air Canada and guns. It probably helps that in my home every third guy in the line has his chin resting on a Pelican case.

I have never had any trouble, confusion or delays concerning my guns and ammo with Air Canada, flying in/out of Kamloops BC Canada.
