Any Canadian renewed their firearms license lately?

Two toneAny Canadian renewed their firearms license lately?
I sent my renewal in a couple of weeks ago.
I just got a letter that says they are "unable to process my renewal at this time" because I did not include a copy of my gun club membership. It says that holders of a license for prohibited or restricted weapons who are not collectors must include this.
Well that would be fine if this had been mentioned on the renewal application, which it was not, and if I even belonged to a club, which I haven't for years.
The last time I checked you only needed to belong to a club to acquire a permit to convey a restricted weapon. Now they're saying you need to belong to a club just to own one??
Why wouldn't this have been mentioned on the renewal application? Is this something new?
Does anybody know something about this.
I'm pretty frustrated right now. I doubt my renewal will be processed now before my license expires which means GASP!!! I will be in possession of firearms with out a license!!!
It will also mean I'll have to take the mind numbing course again.
I plan to phone them tomorrow and see what this is all about but if anyone can shed some light I'd appreciate it.

cariboo_kidIt sounds like you must be in Ontario?
They don't play fair there, making up different rules to make owning a restricted more difficult because they are extremely anti-gun.
Just communicate directly with the CFC and follow their directions, as suggested by others. You will likely need to provide a membership at a club, unfair as it is, to smooth everything out within the deadline.
Spend the energy that comes from going through this BS converting your friends to vote against politicians (liberals) that pull nonsense like this.

Two toneI just got off the phone with the Firearms Office.
For restricted weapons there must be a "purpose". You must be either a collector or a member of a club. I couldn't tell the very polite lady that the "purpose" of my handguns is mainly for shooting at targets off of my deck with my wife and friends....but thats another story.(This is not legal in Canada).
Anyway....she gave me a fax number to send a copy of a membership card to (there were no instructions in my letter as to how one should send this). She also told me that my PAL will expire before this is overwith but that because I have an application in process I will be protected. WHEW! Thank god I'm protected.(Sarcasm here)
I also asked her why this wasn't covered on the original renewal application as it would have been no problem had I known. She told me that they are trying to have that added to the renewal application but because its Federal it was taking a while. I wonder if the requirement for a club membership is just a province specific thing? Nova Scotia in my case. I would think it would be possible to include a seperate sheet of paper in the renewal notice mail-out advising of this need.
Anyway, even though this is ridiculous I feel a bit better now. The lady on the phone was very cooperative and helpful.
Now, how do I explain the 2 Whitetails I got with my .44 mag S.Blackhawk this fall......(I swear, I was only shooting at one...and no, handgun hunting is not legal in N.S. or anywhere in Canada)
Thanks for the info guys.

You've got that right. Every time you turn around somebody from the Ontario gov't is threatening to ban/confiscate our handguns.
I just checked my permit. It's good for four years. Thank God for our club secretary. He does the renewals automatically for us.

Canuck32Is it just me or are the buracrates at CFC (RCMP since they are now in charge of this) trying to tell the gov't what to do? Like they have the authority to do this

If you have that much to fight for, then you should be fighting. The sentiment that modern day ordinary Canadians do not need firearms for protection is pleasant but unrealistic. To discourage responsible deserving Canadians from possessing firearms for lawful self-defence and other legitimate purposes is to risk sacrificing them at the altar of political correctness."

Two toneI joined a club that I've been a member of several times in the past. I faxed a copy of the membership card to the Firearms office the other day.
I called yesterday to confirm that they had received the fax and they told me that they had and that my renewal had been approved.
OK, so now my guns have a 'purpose' because I have presented a little business card style handwritten membership card that I could have made myself. Mind you, this is a well known club and they likely recognized it or may have even called to confirm but I doubt it.
The kicker here is this: I still do not have a permit to convey. So how do my resticted firearms now have a 'purpose' if I still can't take them to the gun club that I am a member of? I suppose that will be the next thing that they require for a renewal as soon as some numb nuts thinks of it.
I shall continue to enjoy shooting off of my front deck for now.
I'd like to hear if this gun club requirement is a provincial thing or Canada wide.

I would love nothing more but I suspect that the hoops I would have to leap through would be high and small!
My new PAL came in the mail today. Its a plastic ID style card just like the old one but there's a tear-off piece of paper on the bottom of the page that came with it that 'must be kept with the licence at all times'. This paper contains the special conditions. The special conditions listed on this paper state that there are no special conditions for this license.
So here I have a modern PAL with a barcode and a magnetic strip and my photo and I have to keep a bullshit piece of ratty old paper with it that anybody could forge with half an hour and a computer. And this bullshit piece of paper is supposed to last for 5 years?
I think its pretty silly.

I didn't have to prove I was a member of a gun club in BC in order to renew my PAL (which includes restricted weapons). BUT, I did have to tell them which gun club I was a member of in order to get my last authorization to transport.
Cheers
