About time we dropped this rare thing, it's becoming all too common. I can think of at least three in my immediate area over the last several years, close to averaging one a year . This one happened about 25 miles from where I live, definitely not backwoods. Sounds like he was calling elk , bow hunting ?, and got a surprise, he did have bear spray and used it, according to his wife. Bear Smart, a reporting service for bear sightings , reported a Grizzly, in a hay field East of my local community hall a couple of weeks ago.

UDAP bear spray works...unless the bear is coming from the same direction as a stiff breeze.

Even a 22lr/38 Spl/9mm will cause a bear to lose interest fast and go back to her cubs.

For other bears w/o cubs I prefer an early Winchester Model 71 in 450 Alaskan. It cuts the rehab time down.

Stiff wind coming at you is just one of the things to cause b ear spray to fail.

Personally I do not think spray works very well.

Against aggressive bears.

Modern city folks and so called biologist's.

For get about thousands of years of humans interacting with animals.

Routinely dangerous animals were killed. Even domestic ones that proved to dangerous to handle.

Many a stud, boar or bull was shipped or killed because they became to dangerous.

A story from back on the farm.

One day dad came rushing in grapping his 99 300sav. Loading it as he went.

The neighbors stud horse and broken out and was in the yard trying to get at our mares.

He had put the rush on dad.

If the neighbor hadn't drove in as dad was going out. It was going to be a very dead horse.

I submitted my "application" but never heard anything back. Someone my brother knows said he received a message saying he was Selected. Not sure if it needed any other official approval beyond the Provincial Government issuing the mandate and sending out the application process to hunters on the Relm site.

I guess we will find out soon enough, but it surprises me that the media is not immediately questioning whether this new way of dealing with Grizzlies is going to be used on this case. One story made it sound like Fish and Wildlife was going to kill the bear as long as they could find it and they are actively looking for it.

Will be interesting to see how they address this then. I suspect it will be the game department that takes care of this bear due to the circumstances.

Growing up, I always heard there was no documented wolf attacks on humans either and now we’re being told you have to travel in groups of people making lots of noise to prevent bear attacks

Wasn't that hilarious?!
We have been told the same: "No documented wolf attacks in humans in history". I don't know who believed this ever Big Grin

There is a reason people feared wolf and bear. It's absolutely mind-blowing that modern city people act like people made this up in the past-

A sow with three cubs dining on some idiot's elk carcass a few km. from my place, near a hamlet called Bergen. Buddy claims F&W is trying to make a genetic connection between her and the Madden attack.

Report from the initial attack claimed they were almost as big as her, which would fit, also sows with three cubs that age are relatively uncommon.
