Stone sheep hunting-where to start?
Oh man! Where to start, where to start

Canuck, where do I start if I am interested in this type of hunt? Time of year, plus all the items you mentioned in your post on another thread of a similar name? Any links?
Thanks, Peter.

Hi Peter,

I am travelling at the moment, but I can reply with some links for you when I am back at my home computer on Saturday or Sunday.

If you can find my other post with the recommended outfitters, you can find all of them quite easily by googling their names. That'll keep ya busy for an evening or two. Wink

You of course have the option of hunting in the Yukon or BC. I am not real familiar with the Yukon Stone Sheep outfitters, except by reputation only.

Do you have any specific requirements/wishes for this hunt? eg. do you want to combo with another animal or two, and if so what are they? Do you want a horseback experience, or more backpacking? Do you have a price limit? (some areas are cheaper, but, generally their territories aren't as productive, so you may have a higher chance of going home unsuccessful). Any expectations with regard to camp quality? (eg. hunting out of base lodge, spike cabins, or spike tents, etc)

Planning is a load of fun, eh? Big Grin

Cheers,
Canuck

PS: check out www.goabc.org/

IIRC, you can search by species, and check out the various outfitters that offer Stone Sheep.

Canuck

Thanks Canuck, I look forward to your return. As I am just starting out, I have no idea what species are available at the same time, and, I have no idea of costs. I would favor great scenery, as I might take my wife. Roughing it is no problem. Horseback would be fine although not for days on end! In the thread on recommendations, someone mentioned Collingwood Brothers?

Give Tom Vince a call 250-263-4350. He has a great area for stones as well as goat, moose and grizzly.

Depending where you hunt, a Stone sheep hunt will set you back 30-50k. In British Columbia, you can often hunt moose, elk, caribou and goat at the same time and in the Yukon, moose, caribou and grizz are usually available.

$50K !!!!!For that price I could do Asia and hunt Marco Polo and Ibex combo, with a short stop in Amsterdam to party on my way back.

Ya, with the BC government cutting back the number of tags and threatening another cutback, count on prices going up even more. At one time, the Yukon was a bargain but prices are going up there as well.

That Marco Polo hunt does look more enticing all the time....lol

30-50K! That's what I was afraid of. I think I will go to Africa and hunt DG!

Peter, have you got your Dall sheep? A good quality fly-in hunt with a top-notch outfitter would run you $10-12K. A far cry from a stone hunt in B.C....I'd rather hunt Dall sheep year after year in AK, and save up for Africa, or Asia.

No I haven't. Is Alaska the place? When I was up there I saw them on the hills by the side of the road. Can I just pull off, take out my rifle and pop one?!!!!! No guide required!
Seriously, where does on go in AK?
Peter.

A 14 day stone sheep hunt in northern BC will cost around $30 grand all inclusive.

If the antis keep buying guiding areas and stop the non-resident hunters, you can expect limited opportunities.

$30K! The sad thing is I'll probably have to do it, to get another step closer to the slam! I'll have to look at some stock options, and right now it doesn't look good.

We have four outfitters that have true stone sheep, not fannin and some really great trophies are taken each year by some of the outfits. A bit cheeper than B.C. and not as restrictive as B.C. regs
