Angus MorrisonEdmonton is a rather soul sucking place, my least favourite Canadian city. Definitely get out of there quickly as possible and use it just for the airport.
HOWEVER, one of the most beautiful places in the world lies a few hours west along Hwy 16. You absolutely MUST rent a car ($25US a day) and drive to Jasper National Park for the day, 300kms / 200 miles West of Edmonton. You will not regret the day trip, people fly from Europe and Asia to see it by the busload. Lots of wildlife to be seen off the highway, too, bighorn sheep, massive elk, the odd moose, wolf, and grizzly as well. Not kidding, I'll be disappointed in you if you don't take the jaunt as you wouldn't know what you're missing. There's a developed hotspring up there, and gondola you can ride to a mountain top. The pic below was taken 3 hours west of Edmonton.

If you've got the time Jasper is worth the trip, not nearly as commercialized as Banff.

A.DahlgrenIts a NHL game on the 6th that I will make and will see about Jasper its looks very nice just looking at photos. Thanks for the suggestions.

sheephunterabJasper is worth seeing but it is a 4 hour trip each way so it's a bit much for a day trip. A hockey game is a great idea. Unfortunately, the main museum is closed as it moves to a new facility as it is worth seeing. Despite all the naysayers here, Edmonton is a very culturally diverse city with some incredible restaurants. There are some great outdoor stores. Both Cabela's and Wholesale Sports on the southside are worth a visit. West Edmonton Mall is one of the largest malls in North America. Whyte Avenue has some great clubs and night life. It's not as bad as some make it sound here!

Angus MorrisonSheep we have very different ideas of what constitutes a lot of driving!
Admittedly a day's drive in northern terms is 20hrs / 1800kms.
With only 7Hrs round trip, leave at 0700 get there at 1030, enjoy the day and leave by dinner time.

You see, every time I've been there it was just before or just after one of my sheep hunts!
The Niscu inn isn't really much of a place but it's cheap, close to the airport and magical to me.
.....but like the other posters have said; go to Jasper Park and see something really special.

sheephunterabOh I've done plenty of long drives Angus....Whitehorse is a one-day affair...well I guess two because it's 26 hours but you get my drift. I was just explaining the proximity of Jasper to Edmonton to the OP. Depending on his arrival and departure times he may not have the luxury of leaving at 7:00.
