BoxheadSuggestions for Alberta/BC Combo Hunt
I have been residing in Calgary for almost 3 years and have another couple to go before my work assignment is complete. I would like to plan a combo hunt for next year for either elk or moose and mule deer and black bear. I would like the hunt to be within a days drive or so of Calgary if possible. I would appreciate any suggestions for area and, specifically, a reputable outfitters to work with. Appreciated.

Mighty PeaceYou can check out Birch Creek Outfitters in Peace River, Alberta. Should be able to combo a Mulie / Black Bear. Great people-very personable/professional.
Their website is:
Birch Creek OutfittersThe drive from Calgary it would be about 7-8 hour drive to PR. I know b/c I drive to Cochrane lots.
Hope this helps

7mm-08Just curious, but do you want to hunt in both AB and BC? All the animals you named could be hunted here in AB and you wouldnt need an out of province liscence.

Demonical Boxhead how limited is your time? Do you have Alberta Hunter safety training etc? Use of a 4x4/ATV? If you have Alberta hunter training you would not require an outfitter.
The other thing is you can hunt elk, whitetail, mule deer etc in the fall and do spring black bear. If you're going to be in Alberta for several more years why not consider that, if you don't mind me suggesting.

Grizzly AdamsThe one thing nobody has asked, since you claim to come from Alberta and Idaho, where is your principal residence? Makes a world of difference in your options.

This is not correct. Alberta doesn't require resident hunters to have completed their hunter education IN ALBERTA. Actually the regs say..." completed hunter education course in Alberta OR ELSEWHERE".
If his primary residence is in Alberta he can hunt without an outfitter (assuming he did Hunter Ed somehwere). If not, his hunter ed doesn't matter, he'll have to go through an outfitter.

Demonical Boxhead says in his post he's been living in Calgary for 3 years, how do you not see that? I would think that qualifies the man as an Alberta resident and
Frans you are probably correct that if he has hunter training elsewhere, he may not require Alberta Hunter Training.
I've never been on a guided hunt. I am my own outfitter, therefore my instanct is to be self-sufficient and equip, plan, organize my hunt from A-Z. And
that's what I would do...But hell,
if you've got the $$$ to throw at an outfitter why not? It sures simplifies the process, as long as you hire the right kinda people. And from his post, I suppose this is Boxhead's situation...

Frans DiepstratenTake'r easy Demonical, I miss all sorts of things... just not taking the time to read properly I guess. I was just commenting on the Hunter Ed thing though.
I'd pay for someone to pack me in with a few horses, if I ever draw on one of those Northern goat tags!

Grizzly AdamsActually, just because he lives in Calgary, doesn't make him an Alberta Resident, by definition. I know of a few people who have jobs that require them to split their time. The mention of "Job Assignment" mades me wonder if he is one of those.

Demonical Grizz,
Frans, likely
Boxhead will reply at some point and explain that. It sounds like he's USA citizen on assignment working in Calgary. But the way our residency is so carelssly monitored all he has to show is an Alberta drivers license, plus proof of hunting qualifications (if he has those) and he'd be able to get an Alberta license.

Grizzly AdamsWe obviously haven't heard from boxhead, but it occurred to me afterwards, that he could be a diplomat, attached to the American consulate. sounds like that type of job posting. What would that make him?

BoxheadGentlemen,
Thanks for all of the replies. I am a US citizen and have soley resided in Alberta since late 2004. My home in Idaho is a vacation to be retirement place. I get to pay both US and Canadian income taxes! Fortunately my company manages the latter for me. I am a resident of Alberta. I am also one that hunts on my own in the States on land I have scouted and know well. Unfortunately I do not have the time to do this here given the demands of my current work situation hence the desire to go with an outfitter. I will call those suggested so far. Thanks again.

Frans DiepstratenBoxhead,
I've had a few clients for spring black bear at these folks:
http://www.albertaadventure.ca/(warning, if you are at work turn sound off, as rifle shots can be heard when the site starts up)
and they came back happy.
I never worked with them for fall hunts.
