calgarychef1draws are done
Well I stayed up til midnight working on my yurt and thought I'd check the draws before going to bed. Just as I suspected I got drawn in the fabled ya-tinda for elk and in 404 for mule deer. Going to be a damned busy fall now!!!
Grizz you better get the hayburners ready

I'm all a twitter.

Canuck32Couldn't tell how I did yet as it appears website has crashed, just as I was getting the info for the first draw.
Glad we have such a great company as IBM who can't even manage a simple server

If you have that much to fight for, then you should be fighting. The sentiment that modern day ordinary Canadians do not need firearms for protection is pleasant but unrealistic. To discourage responsible deserving Canadians from possessing firearms for lawful self-defence and other legitimate purposes is to risk sacrificing them at the altar of political correctness."

calgarychef1Thought I'd mention I didn't get the buffalo er, uh bison draw. So there's more chance for you others to get it!

11 July 2008, 21:20
sheephunterabYa, no bison for us either. We both got antlered and antlerless mule deer and V got non-trophy sheep. Thought for sure we'd at least get one elk and moose tag...ugh. 999'd antelope so only goat left....fingers crossed!
Thankgoodness I drew an Arizona elk tag this year!
Only LEH that I apply for now is the spring grizzly hunt in BC.
That is until the hunt gets stopped when the NDP become the government again which is what I expect is going to happen next election due to the provincial Liberals forcing their carbon tax onto us.
I was successful again on a grizzly this year and want to see if I can better it's size next year.

Frans DiepstratenNo bison here.... just 404 elk... maybe we can exchange scouting experiences, Chef... just not the info on sheep ;-)

calgarychef1Frans my second choice for elk was 404. My buddy got a cranker there 2 yrs ago. I know lots about that area. Were you thinking about hiring an outfitter to haul out your elk?? If not, it might be worth thinking about. I might consider hunting with you-you for elk and me for a monster muley.
I wouldn't mind some pointers from guys who have hunted the ya-ha. Grizz said he'd help me out but the more info the better.
cheers
I did extremely well in the BC LEH draw and got an elk and a goat exactly where I hoped to. It is very tough hunting and you need to know the country and where the bulls hang out, but, there are HUGE ones there and very little hunting pressure.
Moki, I don't know, the NDP is NOT popular among most people I know and, while I have zero interest in Grizzly hunting, I doubt that Carole James would be quite as foolish as Dosanjh was and would NOT want to alienate hunters or any other group.
I think, as an environmentalist since about 1960, that the "radical fringe"such as that poseur dork Genovali and the "biologist" McAllister, have just about shot their wad.
People are getting REAL tired of extremist rhetoric and so I kinda think that there WILL be changes, but, more in line with lowering quotas for GOs, restricting foreign hunting and so forth, in short, hunters VOTE and the NDP KNOWS THAT!
Notë: I detest BOTH the Liberals and NDP, this is just my take on the matter.
The NDP lost the last election by only 7 seats and most of the people I talk to that would have normally voted provincial Liberal are now saying that they will either not vote or spoil their ballets.
Even Gordon Campbell has stated that he is concerned about loosing the election due to the carbon tax.
I was speaking with my Liberal MLA's (a Minister) constituency assistant in regards to this and she tells me this is the same worry that most of the callers into their office are about.
She is very concerned that the Liberals are going to lose the next election.
The NDP no matter what they say are anti-firearms, anti-hunting and pro-enviromentalists that will support the federal NDP party and it's wishes there is no difference between them.
I AM a lifelong "environmentalist", former Lower Mainland B.C.W.F. executive member and a hardcore gun rights and hunting rights worker/supporter. So, I think that while the current N.D.P. is NOT my party, the provincial Lieberals are NO better and THEY are in league with the L.P.C.
I do not see Harper doing anything for us, he is too busy "apologizing"to various groups and sucking up the the Quebec extremists. I have never liked that little phoney, ever since he voted against Reform on gun control...as he did!
Face it, NONE of them give a schit about US, we are a minority that is too busy fighting among ourselves and Canadian firearms forums reflect that, sad to say.
Anyway, I hope you get your Grizzly draw, I can give you some help on Kootenay areas, if you like.

Dark WingI managed to check my draws before the site crashed. Thought I might have had a chance at NT sheep but no luck. Thought about putting in for bison but I'm not set up for it.
Are you gonna try your luck in the willmore again sheephunter?

Sounds like a plan. One of my neighbour's should have drawn too (haven't spoken to him yet), but I'm not sure how dedicated he will be (young family to take care of). I think we need to find a place to share a few beers one of these days!

You better come and ride a little.

I gave Frankie the heads up and he was suitably impressed. How do you pack a yurt?

You better start watching some Discovery Channel, or OLN. Heck, there was a little something on Mongolian nomads on TV today!

sheephunterabHey Frans....we found an unreal mineral lick in 404 yesterday.....it was absolutely loaded with elk sign. I can't remember exactly where it was but beer would likely help my memory.

14 July 2008, 23:44
calgarychef1Sheep, that actually made me laugh!! You should hold out for at least 18 of those "memory vitamins"

MikeyBJust curious, are all hunting licenses given through a draw system in Alberta? Or just a few species? I must admit I've never really looked into it.

17 July 2008, 02:54
sheephunterabLots of both MikeyB. Moose and mule deer are on draw for the most part but there are plenty of general tags for sheep, elk, black bear and whitetail. Antelope and goat are 100% draw.
Many of our draws are for additional and special opportunities as well. I figured it out one day but can't remember the exact number but if you got all your deer draws and bought all your general tags, you could have something like 13 deer tags alone.
I'm glad I live in BC I would hate too be so limited on tags.

17 July 2008, 09:37
sheephunterabYa, being limited to 15-20 big game tags a year really sucks!

When you consider that a hunter in BC can take 18 (yes I wrote 18 that's not a typo) regular season deer then start adding moose, elk, bear, mountain goat, mountain lion, cariboo, several species of mountain sheep, wolves etc without even attempting to get a draw sucks even worse.

calgarychef1I was dreaming about huge elk last night. And by magic a yurt appeared in my yard last night.....should be done tonight.
