Opinions on this buck From Alberta

Hey guys would like to hear what guys think of this buck taken in Oct of this year in Alberta by my buddy? Buck green scored 168 if memory serves me corectly and has not been re measured as of yet. I have as of yet been able to take one this nice, hopefully some day I will.

I don't know exactly what kind of comments your looking for but I would say that any whitetail over 160 is something to be proud of. It is a good starting point in a whitetail hunting career.

There are bigger deer here in Alberta and a guy might stumbble on to one during a one week hunt, but if you truly want a 200 class deer you are going to have to work for it all season and maybe even a couple seaons.

All in all looks good and I would like to have it on my wall.

I bet if would be fun to put the rack from one of the big Canadian white-tails on the head of one of 100 lb "giants" from the Texas Hill Country.

Hipster,
Like AltaYotie already said, any buck over 160 is a very nice trophy. I don't want to give the impression that there are bucks like this over every hill, but they are not uncommon up here. There is a good posibility of shooting a real monster if you hunt hard in the right places for a season or two. The will power to let 150-160 class bucks pass is another factor... One that I have yet to master!

Thats a nice whitetail but with all due respect your "green" score is about 25 points high. I will bet a rifle that buck wont go 145. You may wish to check your measurements and remember that you get credit for inside spread only!That buck has an inside spread of around 17 inches. Take your 168,subtract the 20" of outside spread you have added in,subtract the deductions and you will be on the south side of 145. Again nothing to take away from a fine buck but the bantering of erroneous scores
is endemic.

If I recall, I got mine green scored (tough to do since 3 of his points are broke off), but he was right in the 152-154 mark. The only thing that got me that far were his 24" main beams.

It looks 150 to 155'ish net to me, but a darn fine buck regardless of how many inches it scores.

Its tough to get true perspective with nothing in the pic to judge against. FWIW, the deer in my signature banner pic netted 145. The basic frame looks very similar to the one posted above, except mine loses a few as it only scores 5x4.

Not scored by me and I still have not even laid my eyes on this deer yet. Actually I would not have the first idea on how to do such. Though I would be interested in finding the correct method to have my pal remeasure this deer and see what it goes. I talked to him tonight and it was 162 that he came up with when he measured it after he got it home. So this proves my memory is fading over time.

I would never bet a rifle on anything but an old lady that says "you have too many rifles" might be another story.

My comment, he is a very nice looking buck. Symetrical and heavy the way I like em. I wounder what his age is? If he is a younger buck he may not have reached his top potential and could have been a much higher scoring buck in a year or two. I have seen where a hunter piced up a great shed and the next year killed the same buck with a much improved rack.

Hipster, where did you come up with that 25 inch loss. That's just wrong. The only "shrinkage" you're going to see is on the "spread credit" and don't recall a loss of more than 2 inches on that. The tines are dead bone and they aren't changing even after that 60 day drying period.

Gotta second the comments about score. It does not look like a 160 class buck. It has a really thick rack, but the spread and tine length just don't seem to be there for a 160 class animal. My guess is that it would score in the mid to high 140's.

a 200" deer you may need a second lifetime to get one!

Oh, I don't know about a second lifetime. Where I am living right now in the Peace area, 200" deer are not abundant but I really believe that if you hunted hard all season, you would be able to find something in that range within a couple of seasons.

They are taken out of this area every year. I know that I just don't hunt hard enough!

I'm thinking that deer scores maybe 140. A 160+ deer is huge, that deer is really nice, but not huge.

Well, since everyone is taking a stab at a guess, what the heck. My guess is 151 gross. Never know till I get a tape on them though.
