I'd a thought Sheephunter would be all over this by now.

Obviously one of those Sheep River sanctuary rams gone Walkabout.

Yeah, but I'll bet it has more to do with quality habitat and good population management. A great good news story all around. Except for the whole getting hit by a vehicle thing.

Nothing....It's illegal to sell found dead wildlife in Alberta. I suspect replicas might fetch a few dollars though.

What's to say he was a poacher ? Maybe he was just a lousy shot, in which case missed getting his name in the record book and making a bundle from showing the head off. Those rams do wander out of the sanctuary, on occasion.

Do you have a link to the poaching story or no what was charged with and who etc.
Thanks

sheephunterabNot handy but I'm sure a couple minutes on Google would find it. I read a story that referenced it just the other day.

chin-gas-cookIf a "poacher" is not successful, is he still a poacher??
That sure doesn't look like a bullet hole to me.

Shooting a ram in a sanctuary, regardless of the outcome is poaching...it's most definitely a bullet hole.
24 March 2015, 21:35
chin-gas-cookLOL, the question was just me thinking out loud. Kind of like the tree that falls in the forest.
I don't know how that is "most definitely" a bullet hole??
It may very well be, but, it just doesn't appear to be. Mind you, my experience with bullet holes in sheep's horns is limited.

sheephunterabIn person it's a bit more obvious....the picture is deceiving for sure.

Well haven't found anything yet, lots of other cases in alberta. Any other key words a guy can try in searching.
Thanks

I guess they never learn. Remember the guy who made it as far as the Pope and Young banquet, even got his picture in their magazine, when an alert F& W officer recognized the ram as having come from the sanctuary ?

The Boone and Crocket website has added some live pictures at the bottom of their article taken about 3 months before his demise.

Not that I have seen.

Grizzly AdamsInteresting comment from Bob Scamell, our resident Hunting fishing curmudgeon.

"Many are wondering how the ram survived for 14 years. I'll fly a kite and suggest it's because, except for his occasional wanderings out to the road, he likely lived on a Grazing Lease hunted only by the lame halt and blind, but very rich friends of the even richer Lease holder."
Having hunted that area extensively, I can see a little grain of truth here.

chin-gas-cookAccording to google, it looks to me like the sheep river sanctuary is smack dab in the middle of wmu 406, which has a trophy sheep season. Unless, the map is wrong???

The ram was not in the sanctuary for the final years of his life...he was in a WMU to the east where there is no sheep season.
28 March 2015, 21:37
chin-gas-cookHe must have been a legal sheep for a few years in 406, maybe Mr. Scamel was correct in his observation just not the last few years?

No, there are no grazing leases as eluded to in WMU406.... It's all public land save for one abandoned mine. The sanctuary is not in the middle of 406 but on the east side, adjacent to a WMU with no season. This ram may have never ventured into a legal hunting area in his life. There is no hunting in the Sanctuary and no season in the WMU he moved to. He definitely wasn't protected by some rich lease holder....he was protected by the lack of season.

Bill LeeperSomehow, having the world record ram be the one that lived in a park and got killed with a truck just takes something away from it. Not much "fair chase" hunting there. One thing it shows is how detrimental the use of salt on the roadways is to wildlife. Regards, Bill

sheephunterabB&C is primarily about recognizing the animal....not the hunter and that's why they include pick ups in the book. Their fair chase stance is in many ways separate from their records.

Buddy and I hunted two sanctuary rams in one of the adjacent creeks. The one my buddy shot was a bruiser, the other had broomed his horns off to the point of not being legal. I could probably draw a map of the route he took and it would skirt the grazing leases to the east. It is public land there, but the adjacent ranchers make it difficult to access.

sheephunterabThere is a chunk of public in WMU406 between the sanctuary and the adjacent WMU along the Sheep River but it was closed to sheep hunting quite a number of years ago to protect those rams coming out the east side of the sanctuary.
