light mount on rifle
Can anyone comment on whether its legal to attach a light to a hunting rifle? I am looking onto buying a light and mount for use when tracking and when walking out to the road after dark. Thanks,

Steve

I don't think that's legal, at least where i hunt your gun has to be put away a half-hour after sunset. I think theres also a rule about using lights but i'm not 100%.

I have a Wild West Guns light mount on my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 and mount a Glock tactical light at night. I work as a prospector here in B.C. and use this gun for protection as well as hunting. My understanding is that if you are not using your gun for hunting but for protection of life against wild animals that it is then legal (same as you can only have a capacity of 3 rounds in a shotgun if your hunting with it but more if it is being used for protection). I am also licensed to carry handguns and use this same tactical light on my 3rd Gen G20 10mm for the same reason as the rifle.

Moki, do gun laws differ between the provinces? I am hunting in Alberta, and only want the option of mounting the light into a WWG mount after the hunt is over. As you know, sometimes you find yourself in the woods after dark, and in Alberta (BC too) there are things that want to eat you.

Thanks,

Steve

Hello;
I think one of those head mounted lamps would be a better option, since you get light wherever you look. Lot's of hikers use them. As well, you wouldn't have top worry about Joe Fish Cop.

The only problem with the headlamp is my rifle has a scout scope. Putting the light source behind the scope will render it useless. I think this is why Wild West Guns came up with the light mount for the 1895 Marlin.

Thanks for the comments,

Steve

I always hike after dark with a head lamp on but if you have ever tried shooting a rifle or shotgun with a head lamp on you will see that the light when mounted in the center of your forehead does not point towards what you are aiming at. You would have to adjust it to point to your target (in my case to the left of my forehead because I am right handed).

So having a light on my rifle or handgun gives me the added light and instant point of aim that comes with only really having to shoot to center of mass of whatever the rifle mounted light lights up.

Sorry but I do not know what the laws in other provinces are.
