white north6.8 SPC on Grizzly
I just came back from Barren Ground Grizzly Bear hunting, and I got a almost 8 foot bear. One shot using a 6.8 SPC. Must be the first one to get a Grizzly with that cal? Bear was very healthy and very very fat, choclate in color. I would post pictures, of the recovered bullet and the bear, but I do not know how to.

scruffyYes, you must post some photos !!

Congratulations !!!

drewhenrytntWhere was your shot placement? How close were you? What make of bullet? Pictures please!! I would guess you are the first to take a bear with that cartridge. Caliber is another story.
Congradulations!
You got bigger balls than I do, I would have used a 30-06 as a "bare" minimum.

6.8 SPC on a grizzly bear?
Granted, I have never been bear hunting, but from what I have read on internet message boards, I thought bears were armor plated and couldn't be killed with anything less than a bazooka.

white northdrewhenry, I meant the cartridge. I was about 10 yards away, shot both lungs and the heart, bullet was a 115 gr. on what ever comes from remington. I wish I could post pictures of the bullet and bear. You all would see how much snow we still have. skull is 23 7/8. I even have the shot on a short video clip from a digital camera. How do I post pictures? It just tells me I need permission.

More grizz have been shot along the upper Yukon with 30-30's than any other gun. Indians believe they have a spiritual edge with those old 30-30's. I've been to potlatches and seen 40-50 of them laying with blankets on the floor for gifts.
I have shot wolves and caribou with my AR's (223) Told my wife I wanted a stagg 6.8 for xmas. Get another stagg. I am really getting into AR's with team sling on the skandic, the folding stock mini-14 even fits under the seat.
I use the 30-378 or 7 mag for moose season, and ar's or 460 s&w for everything else. Really enjoy huting with AR's.

~Arctic~I have used the .257 Roberts on 3 occasions for problem bears charging, .....quite hairy!!
A stranger is a friend we haven't met
Two years back, there was a wayward sow polar bear wandering around the village of Ft Yukon. The Indians took after it and shot it with an AR 223. I know some of their relatives up here in our village and they told me about it; later saw the picts in Fairbanks paper.

mstarlingCongrats on a great trophy with a light rifle!
I don't think this is the first bear taken with a 6.8 SPC ... a black bear was reported earlier on the 68Forums.com.
However ... I'd bet it is the first Grizzly taken with one!
I have a nice 6.8 ... and would not take it after a grizzly! I think that is .338 Win Mag and larger territory.

Buffalo BobCongrats on that Grizz, the smile on your face tells it all. You must certainly were aiming small. I also think the 6.8 SPC is a great cartridge but your thinking is deeper than mine. Great job....Bob

Big-footWOW!
I hadn't clicked on the thread until now. I thought it was about asking if the 6.8 was powerfull enough for Griz. And I though that it was a dumb question, probably full of flaming posts so I didn't even look. Now it looks like I'm the dumb one.
Fantastic job!
I see that you are one heck of a hunter so I hesitate to link this but if I were to get even close to a Griz with a 6.8 I'd have hotter loaded ammo with a stiffer bullet. SSA has a new loading with a 95gr TTSX that's a real hog killer too.

white northHi Moki,
It was a remington.
04 August 2010, 19:24
mokiThanks for sharing the info I appreciate it.
I am loading 110gr Sierra Prohunters & 110gr Barnes TSX @ 2650fps and 95gr Barnes TTSX @ 2825fps in my 18.6" barreled Robinson Arms XCR-L in 6.8spc spec 11 chamber 1-11" twist...
I am planning on hunting deer/black bear/wolves this fall with the 95gr TTSX load I am getting an average of 3" 300 yard 3 shot groups with this combo.
So obviously I am totally impressed with the pics and scoring this grizzly what did it measure from nose to tail?
04 August 2010, 19:59
white northMOKI
To tell the truth,I did not measure it. I have it at my taxidurmist right now for a life size mount standing up. I just guessed around 8 feet. Might be more or less than that.
