Mountain Goat in BC

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a good mountain goat hunt in BC for 2011. So far, my best option seems to be Marty Lightburn (Rocky Mountain High). Any comments on this outfitter? Other options? I would like a place with a high population, though I'm not looking for the biggest MG ever. A mature animal will definitely do.

North western BC is the place to go much better the the Rockies as a whole. Try Golden Bear Outfitters, I know it changed hands a few years back but the new guy is doing a great job from what I hear.

Chilcotin hillbilly- Why is it better NWBC than the Rockies. Sorry, but no experience at all in this animal/area.

Can you combine it with other species (caribou, moose...)?

Far less pressure in NWBC as there is little road access and far less resident hunters. Trophy caliber is better with a good percentage of the mature billies going B&C. YOu can combine goats with Moose or caribou as well in most areas.

I'll contact Golden Bear Outfitters for info. Would you concentrate in MG or is a mixed bag feasable in practice. I'm not looking for huge trophies. A mature nice looking billy will definitelly do.

A second animal in most cases should be no problem. Talk to the outfitter and decided whether moose or caribou would be best for a second animal. I know later in September is good for both moose a caribou in that area but the weather can be suspect for goat. Earlier in September may be best.

Rocky mountain high is a good area for goat you should have no problem getting a goat in martys area, there is a few areas in south east B.C. you should be careful of though but not from lack of goats more to do with the outfitter.

You could also try for a bear as well. Just a thought, but since your making a long trip and there is a lot of bear up there.

I hunted Mountain Goat close to the area that Golden Bear Outfitters hunts on the Stikine river many years ago, I still think it was the most beautiful area I have ever been to.

It was September, the leaves were changing color, I never saw another human being except my guide on the hunt, every costal mountain had goats and I shot a B&C goat. The fishing was also excellent

I can't speak for Golden Bear, but I hunted their concession last fall and harvested a great big bodied goat (less than 1/2 inch short of B&C). My guide leased the tag from Golden Bear. Amazing area. Goats everywhere.

Marty has a good territory with lots of nice goats. He'd do a combo with elk too....something you can't do in NW BC.

Or you could combine with mule deer in many cases.

There are quite a few outfitters in the Rockies with good goats...have you looked into any others?

Anna Fontana probably has the highest density of goats, and some very scenic country and nice camps. She does an elk/goat combo...pretty popular hunt for her outfit.

I beleive the old owner fell victim to the same thing that ends many Outfitters business, divorce. Old owner has excellent success.

Anyone know anything about the new owner?

Golden Bear used to take a high percentage of B. & C. Goats.

How did you make out with contacting the new owner?

I just got back from a mountain goat hunt in southern British Columbia. I hunted with Troy Wolfenden at Beaverfoot Outfitters. I saw a ton of goats and had no problem getting a nice, mature billy. Troy's a hardworking guide and I'd hunt with him again.

I killed a Boone & Crocket goat with Golden Bear a few years back. Dempsey Callison. The new guy has raised prices sky High . Dempsy used to get 28,000 for a sheep hunt now it is 40,000. I did a Moose , Goat hunt for 8,500
now just sheep is over 9 grand.

I tried for several years in a row, when the economy was good to get a slot with Dempsey for a Goat hunt. I knew I could take a high scoring B and C Goat with him, so I continued to try.

Anyone know how the new guy is doing with the Goats? Or what he is charging? Thanks.

Boy, that is leaving it pretty late, IMO, the first major winter weather fronts have just moved in and the upper Kootenays can be REALLY miserable at this time of year. But, the RMGoats will sometimes be lower and the pelage is far nicer.

Golden is a pretty scenic little town, a bit too "yuppified" now for my taste, but, there are some good grub places there and it is one place to take your camera as few areas on the planet match the Kootenays for natural beauty.

Thanks Dewey, weather has me concerned as well. Not much we can do about that except be prepared to sit in it.

I really wanted a goat in winter fur, the full body mounts are spectacular. We will see what Diana brings our way!

on 2004 a got a mountain goat and stone sheep with frank simpson. very nice hunt and awesome land,

alot of sheep and goats, my stone was taken on september 30, and the goat on october 4. area hunted mayor hard river kevin frank was my guide.
