BC predator hunting
My buddy was over yesterday and wants to combine some snowshoe winter camping with some predator calling/hunting right after Christmas and I am willing to go along.

So, what is the best call(s) available in BC?

He is thinking an electric rig, but, I am not going to spend the bux on one as this is not a main interest of mine.

We will be largely around "the Elaho" and might go to the W. Kootenays/Boundary country to snipe a few 'Yotes and maybe a Bobcat.

I dont care for the electronic callers. Cold weather/wet conditions play hell with such delicate equipment. I personally use the Primos 'Lil Dog calls. Open reed calls that with a bit of practice are very easy to use. You can howl, make distress calls, pup barks, etc. And when the animal needs a bit of close up coaxing, a lip squeek (making kissy noises) has never failed me. 27 coyotes on the ground for the 2009 season....so far. Its working for me. Smiler
Good luck to you. Good camo and scent control play a big part too.

Thanks, that is the kind of firsthand info. I had hoped to get here. I have LOTS of camo, winter, autumn and warm season and am pretty experienced in scent control, etc., but, I have never deliberately hunted predators before.

I have a P-64 Mod. 70 "Westerner" in a McMillan stock, Zeiss Conquest 4.5x15AO scope and a bipod and I figure that this rig, in it's .264WM chambering ought to lay any Coyote or Wolf on the snow, DRT.

I don't care about hides, I enjoy snowshoe winter camping and have all the gear to do it, so, thought I would help "control" our burgeoning predator populations. Thanks, again.

I glad your getting out and doing your part. we need as many guys as we can get doing the same. Find yourself a goose feather and tie it to a stick with some light fishing line, stick it in the snow in the middle of the opening, this tends to really keeps their interest as the feather blows in the wind.

hillbilly's advice about the feather is one I forgot to mention. I use 2 long wing feathers bound at the quill so they form a 45 deg angle. I tie this to a bush with fishing line so the wind causes it to spin a little and look like a magpie or other bird zooming in on the "distressed animal" Works like a charm to draw their attention away from the caller/shooter.
