Since the canadian dollar is currently pretty strong, I think there might be some good deals out there for firearms sold in the USA especially for more expensive rifles like weatherbys or sakos

Before I really start shopping, did anybody here ever buy a rifle in the USA to register in canada ?

I know it's probably too much trouble to bother with, but I figured it's a question worth asking

I haven't done it, but there are brokers who will do the paperwork for you for about $200 or so and a month of waiting. For the right firearm it would be worth it!

Kneedragger I would suggest you line up a broker PRIOR to purchasing any firearm in the US and make sure what the cost will be. At least one of the brokers has increased their fees from approx $200 to $800 for the first 3 firearms. That may not be a concern if you are purchasing a real collectors item. However I think that will take most firearms out of the range of "a good deal".

you guys are right. It is possible to buy a rifle in the usa, and ask a broker to import it in canada, but the cheapest broker I found asked 250 US$ which makes the whole thing a lot less interesting.

I've never done it (bought a gun from the US), but I would suggest you call the Cdn. Firearms Centre. I recall talking to them about this a while back, and my understanding is that if you have the gun picked out, you can call them and get the registration done up front, then take delivery of the gun at the border. Produce the registration to the Border Services officer, and you're good to go.

I've talked to some dealers in border states, and for a nominal fee, they'd deliver the gun to you at the border. You don't need a broker.

Exporting firearms outside the US without a license is a federal offense (uo to 5-10 years in jail...)

The legal procedure requires a special license and involves permits & a pile of paperwork

That being said, I'm not the one exporting the firearm outside the US ... so technically I have no exposure. So it might work ...

I just need to find a 340 accumark in a gunshop near the border that’s willing to deliver to the Canadian customs and double check with the firearm centre .

It is not hard to do and the gun brokers if you can find one to do it for $200 is worth it otherwise you can do it yourself and it is not hard.

1. You need an import permit from the canadian goverment This is needed to satisfy the US department for the US export permit. You can get the import permit here and they will help you out by phone if needed and you need all info about the firearm, including price.

2.You need to get make,model, serial# and register the firearm at the canadian firearms centre.

3. You have to send proof of registration , firearms licence proof and copy of import permit to the US dealer that you are purchasing the firearm from.
4.You need all documentation on the outside shipping manifest and on the inside with the gun just in case at the border. Send regular mail with tracking ability.

One of the sites I visited mentionned the following :

"Effective Immediately as of September 25, 2008: We MUST charge a $250 export license fee for every approved U.S. State Department export permit. This is legally required by the U.S. State Department."

If I need to pay for a $250 permit, it makes the whole thing less interessting, i'm looking at a rifles that sells for 2100 here and 1400 US in the states

That rings a bell! It was while applying for the export papers to take my rifles to Namibia last year that I noted that the site also has info on IMPORTING rifles. It can be done!

I guess it is up to the person from the states whose is getting the export permit to decide on how much to bill. So far I have done it twice and the place I was buying from did not charge me for the export permit. Personally if the you are willing to sell it the export permit should be free or built into the price of the firearm.

I have a page from the bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. If anyone needs it emailed to them quoting " A non iimmigrant may purchase a firearm or ammunition from an FFL if the firearm or ammunition is directly exported by the FFL so that the nonimmigrant does not take possesion of the firearm/ammunition in the United States prior to expotation" Your firarms licence legally allows you to purchase and receive that firearm in Canada, it does not have to be sent to a dealer in Canada.

An EXTREMELY nice guy ....FFL dealer a couple of miles south of Pembina, ND might help you guys. Try Wilson's Sporting Goods. I cannot say whether or not he can assist.....but he is totally legit. (in my experience), and only a few miles from Emerson, Manitoba.

I spent a few hours looking for info and even called the canada border service to get help. I'm posting this so people wanting to buy a rifle in the states don't have to go trough the same ordeal. (please note that importing a shotgun involves a different procedure)


You don't need any permit on the canadian side (besides your firearms license) to import a rifle in canada.

The problem is on the US side : you need an export permit to send a rifle out of the US : The gun dealer in the US (FFL) needs to obtain a firearm export permit ($250) before shipping the firearm to the canadian border. To obtain this export permit, the canadian buying the rifle must obtain a CII (import permit) from the gov. of canada and send the original copy to the FFL who then asks for the export authorisation.

Both permits may take weeks to deliver, which means both the seller and dealer must be very patient and motivated.

A US citizen may also apply for a "once in a lifetime" firearm export permit . This is the only way a firearm can be sent outside the US without the intervention of a FFL.


Should you decide to skip the US export permit part, buy a rifle and bring it back to canada yourself or ask a friend or a ignorant FFL to ship it to the border , well this may work, but please note that this is a federal offense...

I have bought several rifles from the States & had them imported.........NO PROBLEMS!
And yes, one or 2 since Sept '08 & NO $250 fee

The exact cost eludes me, but its somewhere around $250-300 total to his door.
He does absolutely EVERYTHING and the process is totally painless.

IMO getting a Weatherby, or Sako imported isnt worth it! I am LH shooter and well made rifles that are'nt run of the mill "plain vanilla" are very hard to find up here, so its usually rare customs I bring up.
