dang elk hunters
Well buddy calls me tonight and says I've got good and bad news. Oh oh I think he's shot our moose without my being there. Much worse he's shot an elk- a great big one at that. Here's a guy who's shot to many elk to count and he's saying a great big one? Hmm, "what about the bad news", I say. "Well remember that spring on the mountain, the one you fell asleep beside?" "Yea, I remember it". Well, he says "over on the next mountain lays my great big elk!!" Think you can help me pack it out??

So tomorrow bright and early, I'm gonna pack out a "great big elk" Eeker

Darn, Chef, and then he might even offer you some meat for all the work you did, and then you'll have to cut it up, and freeze it, and later prepare it, and you have to spend a day (or two) in the mountains. I really, really feel for you. Razzer

I feel terrible for him too. Smiler

With my buddies the deal always is...you pack it, its yours. You always have takers when you need some help.

Well at least your packing out an elk with a friend. I missed out on bow season, but got back to town saturday and made it out for an evening hunt on opening day of rifle on sunday. My brotherinlaw was with me, and I had a nice 5x5 elk come to under 20 yrds in the field to my cow calls. The bull was bugling , and had a harem of 3 cows already. All I could think was to shoot him, or waiting for my brotherinlaw to take him as I would of been spotted moving. To say the least, we never took the 5x5 bull b/c my brotherinlaw and hunting buddy had seen a bigger 5x6 and a beautiful large 6x6 they got on video during bow season, so I held out. Now, I kind of regretting not taking the bull on opening day evening. My wife was sure upset. I been out 2 more evening hunts, and not even a cow elk. Lots of deer. But last nite right at cutoff, I seen 2 wolves siiting on the knoll close to where the elk came out on sunday evening. No wonder no elk around right now. If it wasnt past legal light, one of them would of had a bullet in it. So I'll go out this evening and try again. I'm not going to go out on friday or saturday as there will be too many road jockeys running around everywhere. And some clowns on the opening day and monday evening driving thru the field-with no permission.

Cheers to you helping your buddy pack out the elk he shot without you. May he reward you with a few roasts and steaks. Also a few beers too.

We found some horses!!!!!!!! A friend and his wife rode in and brought a pack horse and a mule. It was still lots of work because it was an inaccesable area, but much less than packing it all the way out. We packed it a little ways to the horses and let them carry the quarters. We carried the rest, which was still enough.

Now that was a good idea !!! 3 or 4 of the last 5 moose that we have gotten .. we go find someone with an ATV .. offer them some cold hard cash for a 'great adventure. ... if they will haul out the moose for us .. Confused Works perfectly ... they have done something interesting for the day .. my back is normal ... and the $100 - $150 is not even missed a year later .. Roll Eyes Big Grin I sent you a PM ...

I must remember to put a small bundle of 20's in my pocket... we might run into a seismic guy up there near Grande Priarie, who'd be in for some moose hauling... it's getting close now....!

Where abouts Grande Praire are you headed. I live around the area, maybe I can give you some help.

I drew in 356, which is South of Grande Prairie. I'll be going up to meet a friend who I haven't seen on AR in the longest time. At least that is the plan. I have to phone him this weekend to finalize the plan. Contrary to expectation he didn't draw himself in that zone.

I hope he can still find some time to show me around, and/or hunt with me... I've never been up there (driven through GP on my way to Dawson Creek and back).

SHOOTIST,

That sounds good! I'm in the early season, as I'm hunting mule deer in November, and antelope mid october. Had to spread it out a little.

Like I said I've never been up there, so...

It's mainly forest, cut up with logging/oil field roads, I reckon? And the odd creek/river/swamp?

Good luck on your late hunt.

Yep there's lots of oil roads and logging cutblocks. I would stay nort of the Kakwa river and hunt the cutblocks hard. From all reports there are lots of moose around and they are starting to respond to calling. Good luck and have fun.
