Bringing meat out of Canada
I let 3 old friends talk me into going back to Newfoundland for moose next year. Are there still US regulations about where to cross back into the USA with game meat? Are those USDA forms still necessary?
Thanks,
Rich Elliott

You would have to ask your government that one.

Rich,

US government (USDA) lifted the ban on Canada meat a month or two ago.

You can bring it back...... thumb

I just brought some bear meat accross border(into USA) a couple of weeks ago, in fact Guide said that several hunters were fined for NOT having any meat to declare. It was a $200 fine for wasting resource's(not using the meat)

So, no more USDA forms need to be filled out and you can cross the border anywhere now?

How would that work? For instance here in Alberta we don't have to take the meat from a bear, so them having no meat isn't breaking any laws where they hunted. It is also allowable to give the meat to anyone you wish with nothing more than a hand written note. Are you saying the US gov charged them?

THis happened in Ontario(this fall). I guess when the guy was buying his export permit he was boasting about the size of bear and when asked about meat he promptly said he hates the stuff and left it all for the ravens. There was a conservation officer listening in on the conversation and that's what prompted the fine. When the hunter arrived home he called guide and complained to him about what happened. I guess the guide talked to ministry about this and said that it was a law but rarely ever used in the case of bear(meat). They can only guess the hunter must have said something to irratate officer as to the fine being levied.

Rich Elliott: For your info.....

We just crossed over into the US from Canada last week after a Caribou hunt and did indeed need to file the required USDA forms. No big deal though.

Lee,

Did you have to cross at a specified border crossing or does it matter now?

Rich, YES. According to the information we received there ARE specified crossing points designated to be used, however I only have a partial list.

On this list is a phone number for USDA, Veterinary Services/Import-Export in MD.

I am sure thr Canada Customs internet site would also have the info. Check it out. It's loaded with neat info and easy to find.

My Wife loves Newfoundland and it's people. She wants to go back so we trying for a Moose and Caribou hunt in the North next year. Never been up to the northern part.

Good luck!

That'll get you a fine in BC too. And you'll lose your rug, rifle, hunting gear etc too.

All edible portions of black bear must be removed to a place of consumption (not left for ravens). If the hunter gives the meat to his outfitter to "consume" thats no problem. But it must be removed from the field to a butcher shop or home.

Cheers,
