Cuddly ?????

It only takes seconds for a bear yo do horrific damage. So if the guard was a minute away. They could arrive to late.

p dog shooterCan not count the number of days I have spent camping in Grizzly country.
The damage a bear can inflect on a human body can easily lead to great Bodley harm or death in seconds.
Once the bear makes contact you could have been the bravest or the scarcest person. The bear doesn't give a dam.
I have found that being cautious around things that can harm oneself saves a lot of stiches.
Whether that is using simple hand tools to more complicated machinery. To a unfamiliar dog, bull, cow, bear, other critter or thing.
Familiarity can lead to contempt making one careless. Leading to stiches or worse.

450 FullerWhen in MT,WY or AK camping in the outback, I have kept a pre-war Model 71 in 450 Alaskan or 450 Fuller
next to my sleeping bag. Even a Ruger BH in 45 Colt with 300 gr Hloads that work near the cabin.
As to why? A cabin owner last summer near Prescott, AZ was killed by a black bear weighing less than 200 pounds.
Bear spray? It works unless the bear likes spiced
people meat or the bear happens to be coming from the same direction as the wind is blowing in from.
Read up on Dr, Stephen Herrero's "Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance".
The Darwin Award gets folks in bear country who travel without common sense, suitable guns, or both. Nature deals with those who actually think they are on top of the food chain.

If you read the records, dogs leashed or loose, seem to be an all too common thread. Herrero is not a fan of accompanying dogs
