HOWDY, New to here. suggestions for Black Bear?

New here and looking for info on black bear hunting in Canada.

I live in the upper part of lower Michigan and figure anything within 600-800 miles driving of the Sault is not a problem.

Looking for spring hunt or early fall.

anyone gotta reccomendation they would wish to pass on?

Please also include websites if you have them.

You can find black bear north of you in the Sault Ste Marie or Thunder Bay area, but probably further east in New Brunswick is better. There are a lot of outfitters there, and they have an excellent success ratio. Someone here will probably know a couple of people you can contact. Best wishes.

Just a note about Canada's black bear populations.
British Columbia has an estimated 165,000 black bears which is over half of Canada's black bear population.
The Queen Charlotte Islands located off the West coast of B.C. and just South of Alaska has some of the largest black bears in the world. I'd recommend that you go the distance and look here......

Vancouver Island has fantastic bear hunting as well. I believe that is one of the places that Jim Shockey guides.

Yes, I have seen him on his TV show talking about it. It is a little outside of a days driving range though. and iI don't have any idea what the price would be out there but it is probably more then a nereby hunt would be in ontario or Saskatchewan.
I figure I can get to anywhere within 800 miles of the Sault in a days driving. Or I can go around the south shore of lake superior and then go north that way. The great lakes area definite travel pain for us michigan natives. You can't go anywhere in a straight line. You always have to go somewhere else first.

I am friends with Eric, and his son, Eli. Tell them Clarke said "hi."

They will put in a good effort for you, and if you are lucky, Eli is still dating his GF Punky, she's a damn good cook!

IIRC Eli guided a fellow to a HUGE blackie last year...

I would imagine that at that time of year, you will be truck spot and stalk hunitng. That is, You will drive soemwhere, hike a bit, glass alot, and then stalk. It's a beautiful area, and if you have never been there, you will be overwhelemed by the beauty of it..

Last time I checked his website, it seemed that Erics prices were very reasonable, too...

New Brunswick if you are interested in hunting over bait . large black bear Pop .NB is not conducive to spot and stock , woods to thick . waundered the woods here for 50 years and maybe have seen 12 bears never shot one yet . havn't had a great interest in bears . usually too busy to bait and hard to find a place far enough from an outfitter"s bait not to cause problems .------ herb

I used to live in northern MN near International Falls. SPent about a year in Dryden, Ontaior (two hour drive north of International Falls, 4 hour drive from Thunder Bay Ontario). Lots of big bears within a 2 hour radius of Dryden, typically, when you get up there in northwestern Ontario, the bear numbers and size goes up. Mucho less people, so not the pressure. A good friend goes every year near Ignace (3 hours from Thunder Bay) and I would go with this guy if I were to want a bear hunt. If you are interested, email me and I will get the numebr from my buddy. He and his friends kill big bears and this year he shot a nice chocolate bear. I will be going to B.C. in the spring for bear. I was wondering if it is legal in Canada to use a red dot type scope for hunting? Does anybody know about Stoney brook outfitters?

I wouldn't use a red-dot scope here as there are better choices for the widely varying conditions that you will encounter; I am fairly certain that they are legal, but, a "normal" scope is better.

For Bear hunting in Spring, a very good choice is the Leupold 1.75x6 or 2.5x8, these are about the best scopes for general B.C. hunting. A good idea is to have GOOD Q.D. mts on your rifle and bring along a spare, mounted, sighted-in scope as the country is rugged, wet and slippery and scopes do get whacked fairly often.

I don't know what you plan on shooting, but, you do not need a mega-magnum here. Probably the finest Black Bear caliber is the old .30-06 with a good 180 gr. bullet, I prefer Nosler PTs. You should plan on shooting up to about 200 yds, as most guides try to get their hunters within reasonable range and I find a sight-in of 2" high at 100 yds. works best here, the old 3" high tends to produce high misses.

Make sure you bring good photography equipment and a really good binocular; this is the most beautiful landscape left on Earth with only Alaska being it's equal. You will enjoy it, return home with great photos and never forget it.
