I heard the deer population was down a few years ago. I'm wondering if it has recovered. Any information would be much appreciated.

I was there 2 yrs ago and the place was infested with them. Didn't go this yr but friends went and did well.

Bill Heavey had an excellent article on Anticosti in Field & Stream last winter (I think). His statistics were that there was close to 20 deer per square mile there. It really made me interested in going there.

There might be an average of 20 deer/mi^2, but they aren't uniformly distributed. I saw 8 deer the first 8 hours and none the rest of the time.

Getting there is a big pain - I was sitting in the airport 2 1/2 days and the outfitter doesn't give you a break.

Some guys I was with didn't see any deer the whole time.

My brother and I hunted with SEPAC last year. Every one in camp shot two deer, mostly within the first couple days. I shot two 6 point bucks on day two. The deer there are very small on average but there were some true trophies taken.

a good friend is guiding for Sepaq and this is not the whole story they had for the whole season the sucess rate was below what they had this year.

so better to check and not going at the beginning of the season ...

this winter wasnt really bad in snow and temperatures so the story this year maybe different ....

Yes, the deer are smaller than on mainland, but they are a true sub-species. You won't get many very big ones on Anticosti because they've been an isolated breeding population for so long that they've evolved into a sub-specie.

A couple of years ago I got two that weighed about 125#

If you're interested in meat deer, then the smaller ones (my friends call them "suitcase deer") are best.

Outfitter is important. My outfitter was garbage and if I go again (likely) then it's going to be with one of the high-end guys.

Problem is getting there. Best is by private plane but the unless it's a twin there's the weight problem getting the meat out.

You can go by ferry but the schedule is insane.

I haven't been in a few years, but Anticosti has an unreal deer population. Plenty of 6 pointers can be had in a three day hunt. The bigger ones are smarter (go figure).

I can hardily recommend Rene Borque at Jupiter 12 through SEPAQ.

I'm not sure whitetails have been on Anticosti long enough to be called a subspecies. They were only introduced in 1896 or 1897. The small size probably is a result of the island effect and over population.

I hunted there about 10 years ago and killed a good buck, although my guide was one of the worst I have ever had.

Who are the high-end outfitters these days?

My dad's been 3 times. Most recent was 2 or 3 years ago with a friend--they didn't see much, think one doe and a spike.
