How much luck would you be pushing....
...if you were to book your BC goat hunt to begin on Oct. 15 and go through the 25th?? Too much risk with the weather getting bad and staying that way?

Finding a time that balances good cape length with decent weather is tricky. When/where does the balance lay?

What are your opinions on this? BTW, I have booked the hunt, but I have not locked the dates into "concrete" with the outfitter. This is my 1st goat hunt.

Thanks, gents.

If you are in the interior I wouldn't push it much past mid Sept. Any time after that and the weather and the amount of snow can be a factor. Pretty decent hides beginning around that time.
On the coast you can go a few weeks later.
Good luck,
Jim

I got a good hide on mine in late Sept. The snow really started piling in just as we left. Going back on Oct 3-10 this year. I expect a good bit of snow as we are in northern interior BC. I am just doing moose this time, but my partner is doing moose and goat.

Good Hunting,

Thanks for the reply guys.. I may end up trying to get it pushed back a week or so just to be on the safe side. I kind of like your dates, Tim.

BTW, we'll be inland.

What part of BC?

The locals around here (SE BC - Rocky Mts) generally wait until November.

My two goats were taken Nov 17 and Nov 30. The hair is real long then.

It depends upon just how tough and fearless you are. Big Grin I was on a hunt in northern BC with BC Safaris in 2003. The hunt took place the second week of September. It was a multi species hunt where I had the choice of hunting for mountain caribou, moose, or goats. My primary interest was to take a nice goat, but the weather turned it into a caribou and moose hunt. On the first day of the hunt it started raining, and at the elevations where the goats were to be found the rocks were covered with ice. I love hunting, but have this irrational (?) fear of falling off a perfectly good cliff, so after a half-day of slipping and sliding I decided to abort that mission and go moose hunting. It rained for the first eight days of the hunt and then the weather got better. It changed to snow.

Sometimes you make good decisions and sometimes not, but this one turned out OK as evidenced by the following photos.

Most of my money I spent on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted

I also vote for as late as possible, curious as to what outfitter in the golden area you are headed out with. That and your conditioning could also affect the outcome. Some outfitter areas in the golden area can be somewhat affected by late snows others not so much.
