Handguns on Safari and Shikar
Hello all,

Hope this finds everybody well.

I am doing a little research project into handguns that have been taken on Safari and Shikar.

If anyone has seen mention of handguns taken on hunting trips as sidearms, please put a post up.

Just title and author would be great, but if you have more info it would be welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Scrummy

Google 'mark hampton hunting' he has handgun hunted all over the world and taken just about everything imaginable with a handgun.

He also has YouTube videos and has written a book "Handgun Hunting" that is available on Amazon.

You might also ask over at the recently resurrected Handgun Hunting International Web site, where Mark H. sometimes hangs out.

I feel there is a difference between a sidearm and the current crop of hunting handguns.

The short barreled stockless rifles that folks like Mr Hampton use are a far cry from a sidearm.

If it needs a sling, instead of a holster…

Not arguing that they are harder to shoot accurately than a traditional rifle, or that they are legally handguns, just that a sidearm (which was in the OP) is different.

I do know that Jeff Cooper carried a 1911 on some of his safaris, and stated he shot some game with it- looking in his commentaries would likely provide details.

If I recall correctly, I think TR took a revolver on his hunts, but what, if anything, he used it for is open to question.

I think some PH’s wrote about Americans bringing them, and had a bit of a negative attitude about it back in the heyday of safari hunting.

I'm pretty sure Ross Seyfried used a revolver conversion back many years ago on cape buffalo. Likely before there were factory-made revolvers ala Freedom Arms, but could be wrong.

Off the subject, but I have an old 90s Gun Digest article titled "Use Enough Gun" by Ray Ordorica that while while not about big bore revolvers mentioned Ross, but got me interested in the larger calibers at an early age.

Pretty much every handgun ever made has been used for hunting and has been written about. Check what's legal to use wherever you are going.

Every article that Ross has written is worthy to read IMO.
