I have a XD that i bought to carry mostly in my vehicle and it doesnt have a safety. For this reason i am very leary about leaved it loaded with a round in the chamber. Am i being overly cautious? Is there much problem with these pistols firing due to a sudden jar or something else?

I don't know about the XD, but I leave my Glock 19 that way all the time with no worries. Your XD should have a grip safety and a trigger safety. I would not worry about it.

The XD has two safeties, a trigger safety similar to Glock and a grip safety. The XD won't fire unless you have your hand around it.

I have two XD45's and I consider them very safe.

XDs are quite safe as Zeke says as they have two safeties. Remember the primary safety is the finger off the trigger until the weapon is on target and you have decided to shoot.

Your XD is slightly "safer" than a Glock IMO. The grip safety pretty much excludes an accidental snagging of the trigger & having it go off. I would have no problem carrying either w/ a round chambered.

Your concern comes from lack of training and familiarity of the firearm. You need to get both to feel comfortable. A firearm without a round in it, is a paperweight. Get the training and confidence to carry with a round in it. Also get a decent holster to carry your firearm that covers the trigger guard. Esox357

The XD is as safe as any modern double-action revolver with all chambers loaded. I say this without citing any evidence because I want to encourage you to study your manual.

However, your gas tank, your battery, your gun, can all do damage. Check out this accidental discharge. Theoretically impossible, yet. it happened. http://www.ajronline.org/cgi/content/full/178/5/1092 So, your caution is not misplaced.

If you want to be ultra-safe, attach a 4x4 wood block to the front of the holster or the box the gun is in to catch the bullet if a car fire should cook off the round in the chamber. It'll still go off, but much of the bullet's energy would be absorbed by the wood's fibers. I would rather be hit with the wood block so propelled than the bullet. The rounds in the magazine will just blow shreds of brass, plastic and bits of the magazine around. Anticipating that sort of event would be overkill, though.
