XD 45 and cast bullets?
Has anyone with a new XD45 tried cast bullets in it yet? I'm liking the good feed back about these guns and am thinking of one but I do have a criteria that my low velocity guns shoot cast because I'm cheap and do enjoy making my own. I've heard of guns like the Glock being finiky about cast so thought I'd ask.

Thanks

Does anyone know what type of rifling/barrels they use?

A friend of mine bought one recently and this past weekend put around 400 rounds of cast through it. The bullets included an RCBS 45-201SWC and the Lee 452-200RF. He said that both shot & fed well. His gun now has some 600 rounds through it without being cleaned & he's had no failures to feed, eject, etc. He's also reporting good accuracy with both cast & jacketed loads. Kinda gets ya to drooling doesn't itSmiler?

Thanks, Just doing my research before I buy one (maybe). Some guns guys just can't get to shoot cast well and cast is 80% of my pistol ammo.

NBH: Poor accuracy with cast bullets is usually the result of polygonal boring. It doesn't have to be that way. Your XD has conventional rifling so cast bullets should be great! Even with Glocks and H&Ks that have polygonal boring, results can be improved with harder cast bullets. A lot of guys have Oregon Trail bullets work very well. Very hard at 26 Brinell. I've used them with an XD Tactical in .40 with excellent results, but I haven't got my hands on the .45 yet. I have found what I believe is the best deal on commercially cast bullets to be had at www.northeastbullet.com their prices are very good and shipping is included in their price. Brinell hardness is 19 which is about 1 number higher than typical and to further reduce any chance of leading, the bullet is completely moly coated. Great deal on a great bullet! Wink

I use heat quenched wheel weights and have prooved hard enough to stand 1600 fps in 44Mag carbine loads. I'm not one for buying cast bullets, I'm demented enough that I enjoy casting bullets for hours and have a friend equally so. I would say that if they work in your 40 they should be fine in a 45. Thanks

Just got one this weekend and am having a fine time shooting up all the spare ammo, both cast and jacketed, I've got lying around. So far I'm getting ~2" to 3" groups at 25 yards with anything I put through it. Most of my shooting has been at bowling pins at 25 yards and as long as the sights are alined the pin drops. I've also been shooting an IHMSA swinging pig at 100 meters with good success. I'm thinking about hanging a set of XS Sight 24/7 Express sights on this gun as my eyes are getting old. Has anyone had any experience with either the large dot or small dot versions of these sights?

I have a set of those ordered for my XD 45 5" - I'll post how they turn out.

I recieved the XS Sights Tritium Big Dot sight system and installed it. As might be guessed it's a heck of a lot quicker with a totally different sight picture. The accuracy on bowling pins at 25 yards and in is about the same as the three dot sights that came with the gun. On paper the groups are about the same, perhaps a little larger with the big dot, ~2 1/2 to 3 1/2". The more I shoot these sights the better I get with the sight picture, maybe after awhile the paper groups will shrink a bit, time will tell.

KLN357,

Thanks for the info on Northeast Bullets!!
I wish I had seen it last week...I just order 4000 9mm from Midway and it was $59 higher at dealer price than Northeast.

I used to cast everything I shot, but time and age are pushing me to buying regular pistol bullets, at least 9mm, .40 and .45.

Thanks again!!
