I recently had a S&W 629-6 follow me home.




Not being a Pistolero, I thought I might inquire if there might be any problem using max book loads in this pistol such as

240 Gr. Hornady XTP over 24.5 gr. W296

or

24.8 gr. H110.

Hornady #10 manual shows these as max loads with a velocity of 1400 FPS.

I'm thinking 23gr. of W296 for estimated +/-1,250 FPS.

Currently undertaking load development for a ~9 inch Dan Wesson
24.5g of W296 gave an average of 1500fps with 240g XTPs (and sticky extraction)
On the other hand the max load of 2205/H110 (24g in my books) only gave 1380fps. I can’t find a max of 24.8g listed among my collection of manuals (don’t have Hornady)

Geedub, I hope those loads are comfortable from that lovely N frame in your hands. Mine don't get along very well with DA revolvers in this caliber.

I use a load of 22G. of 2400 under a 250G. Keith cast in linotype doing 1250 MV.The Smith will handle it.

+1, my 29 was made in 1979 and has been shooting this load from the day I brought it home. It has been shot ALOT too!

I have that same 629 Light Hunter, only with a red dot on the rear sights.

My favorite load is a 310 gr. Sureshot hardcast over 17.5gr of 2400. It gives 1,250 fps with excellent consistency.

I will admit that when attending a SHOT show + visiting the S+W booth,I got to talking with their sales rep.about the new titanium 44 mag revolver.He looked me straight in the eye + said,"I work for the company,but I tried it out with full house loads + I did NOT want to fire the full cylinder.That light a pistol with that much pressure hurts you,it did me."

Whatever load you decide on, just know that 296, and 110 are the EXACT SAME powder.
So is HP38, and 231

I too prefer 2400 myself.

in my limited experience with 44 magnum revolvers I found that hogue unigrips made them quite pleasant to shoot. very manageable. even one handed. sierra 240gr bullets and accurate #9 produced the most accurate hand loads. really nice 629 Geedubya. looking foreward to seeing the pigs you wack with it

I run 17 gr. of AA #9 under 305 gr. moly coated lead in my 629 6". 1190 fps. 1250 fps in a 7.5" Super Blackhawk.

I open the cylinder, shake the gun and half of the empties fall out. That's using once fired brass.

GW, I used to have that exact revolver. I used it in Texas when we'd go down for hog hunting. I later went to a Freedom Arms 454. The 629 is a slick piece of machinery!

Since this thread begun I’ve swapped a 9 inch Dan for a 7.5inch ported 629 Stealth Hunter

Trying a couple of old Dan loads has me pining for extra barrel length and velocity
With 240g XTPs 24g of 296 in Geco cases gives me 1303fps (84 less than the Dan) and 24.5g gives an average of 1313fps in Starline Brass
Both loads are lit by Winchester LP primers.

Given this revolver will be used for silhouette matches I was hoping to up the anti to 1400. Is this possible with a 7.5incher?
Should I be jumping to CCI #350 magnum pistol primers?
