I have been a fan of the 38 Super cartridge for a long time.

Does anyone make a Colt Commander-style pistol (Colt would be good) with the arched housing in that caliber? ? Stainless or blue, doesn't matter.

Yeah, till I read the article, I had no idea that anybody still chambered for it.
Checked out the Taurus web site, and all 3 models are marked "Discontinued". Drat!

I'll keep looking;somebody is bound to make a 38 Super Commander-sized 1911, with good sights, beveled mag well, and the ejection port work.

Don't know about arched housing but I have a Kimber Pro Carry II in SS in 38 Super. Not a 1911 but EAA also makes the 38 Super in their Witness line of guns, including an Elite match. Might also check out Charles Daly. I have their Commander style gun in 45 ACP. They may make it is 38 Super, I don't know.

Depends on what you mean by "make"

There are lots of custom pistolsmiths who can make you whatever you want on a 1911 frame.

Any 1911 style gun could be modified with a over the counter arched mainspring housing.

If you are talking main line manufacturers with mass produced guns, check with Springfield Armory, or if your heart is set on a Colt, the custom shop can do this up for you.

Really, cost is going to be your break point. You can get a old Colt .38 Super, have it sent in to a custom smith and have it bright nickled and put ivory grips on it, but expect it to cost several grand or find something close and do a little work on your own and be in the gun for several hundred, and lots of your time mostly spent looking.

over the counter, Colt, Springfield.

Any 1911 9mm can be converted very readily as well. That may be the best route as well, get a 9mm Commander and have it rechambered.

The current CDNN catalog has the Taurus 38 super in blued and stainless versions. They usually buy discontinued lots. It's on page 18, don't know if they still have any inventory or not.

I would recommend the Rock Island before the Taurus. And its available as a Commander

Curious as to why the preference.

I am supposed to be a 1911 snob! But, I have handled and looked at both. the RIA guns were better in pin dimensions. The Taurus guns, nothing fit quite right when trying to add things. Everything on them worked ok, just nothing quite to standard spec.

For the money in my experience, The RIA is the best bet, better than some of the American counterparts.
If Remington does there new 1911 in .38 super....I will be very happy

that would be too much to ask for...

It's not a commander. 38super barrel in a 9mm slide, colt stopped marking the caliber on the slides a long time back.



You can order a 38 Super from Colt too. This is a 38Super with all the trimmings at about $2k. it's not really accurized but will shoot a one hole cluster at 50ft.

Here in Great Britain long before the handgun ban I had a "Heydrich" gun. That is to say one of the number of Colt .38 Super "Super Match" that were purchased by us in WWII and issued to the S.O.E.

It was extremely accurate and externally was marked with British Ordnance acceptance marks. I wonder where it is now?
