I am interested in purchasing a sidearm in 45 Long Colt. I have been told that the Ruger Blackhawks will take a more powerful load than say a Vaquero (sp).

How do you like your Ruger Blackhawk?

I have a SS Blackhawk in 45 Colt. 4 5/8 inch barrel. Love the gun. It takes max 310 grain loads very well. Here it is:

The Ruger Blackhawk is the way to go....dollar for dollar I prefer them over any other single action, even Freedom Arms. I have 2 in 45 Colt.....

My preference is for the Bisley grip model, for me it makes the heavier loads easier to handle.

The one in the photo is my favorite and I have hunted with it here and in Argentina.

You will never have cause to regret buying one.

Blackhawks are great guns. Clean up the trigger and go.

You can get 1 3/4 to 2 lbs clean, with factory parts. HUGE difference in feel and control

Where are you in NM?

I agree with all the positive comments on Ruger Blackhawk's and have several. The latest is a blue steel 41 mag., 6.5" barrel on which I installed the steel "Bisley" kit sold by Brownell's. One thing to be aware of...All blue steel New Model Blackhawks have ALUMINUM grip frames which many (myself included) do not like at all.

True, but be specific.

The Vaquero (you spelled it correctly) is strong. The "New Vaquero" is not as strong as the original Vaquero. Lighter frame, I hear. Not sure about the size of the cylinder.

Don't get confused by the term (if you hear it) "New Model Blackhawk". "New Model" and "Old Model" refer to the firing mechanism (having a transfer bar or not). Both Vaqueros and New Vaqueros are all New Models.

Remember; verify for yourself everything you learn. Believe only half of what you see and one quarter of what you hear. That goes double for everything you find on the internet, even this post, as I am working from memory.

Lost Sheep

My friend recently picked one up for hunting.He gave it to me for a trigger job.Typical Ruger trigger which is now 3 lbs without any creep.He's all smiles now.He picked it up ,like new , for $ 100 !!!

The moose didn't like it very much!

I have the same gun, great shooter w/ lead bullets. It can take a pounding like none of the other SA out there, the FreedomArms being the exception. Nothing stops a 300grLFP @ 1100fps.

22WRF: Get the Blackhawk, not the New Model Vaquero with its smaller frame and cylinder. The Blackhawk gives you adjustable sights and significantly more strength should you wish to shoot the heavier handloads.
In my experience, it pays to check the lockup on any Ruger revolver before buying. Some are downright sloppy -- i.e., the cylinder wiggles sideways and fore and aft when you have pressed the trigger and let the hammer down into full battery.
