Holland and Holland Video
Received my video from H&H detailing the building of double guns. The narration seems to be rather poor at times as it sounds unintelligble due to poor accustics, at least on my DVD player. The barrel maker must be French or Belgian and you really must strain to understand his speech detailing the description of jointing, applying solder, etc. I've only watched about half of the video due to time constraints but the action building sequence has been the best so far. Details the man hours, manufacturing and fitting of each part. While the barrel making/assembly was difficult to hear it was well presented in terms of demonstration from start to finish. Stock making is next and hopefully, clearer narration. The audio quality sounds as if they are in a tunnel. Not nearly as well done as the little clip posted here a few weeks ago. The personnel narrating are rather stiff. However, the manager of the shooting school does a nifty job of explaining the mechanics of fit through narration and demonstration. I did not know that proper fit requires that 60% of shot placement be above point of aim adn the reason why. You can also see how a gun should fit by observing this fellow mount his try gun. Cost was $58.00 including shipping and it arrived within a few days. So far not a lot in the way of double rifles. Although they showed a set of .500 barrels during fitting of the "collar" and rib. Will dkeep you updated.

Dutch,

Just got mine last night and I also have watched about half of it as well. My impressions are very similar to yours. The barrel maker is very difficult for me to make out. I'll have to see if they have CC on the DVD as I'd really like to know what he had to say.

The explanation of the lock maker on how cast affects the shape of the locks themselves was very interesting. So was the inletting or as much as I got through it (that's where I left off).

The quality of the video itself is very good. Detail is quite good. You can see file marks, wood grain, etc.

Over all a good buy, so far.

The barrel maker is French or Belgian. The sound quality does fluctuate a bit from time to time, but over all it's excellent.

The photography is splendid. It's a great video. It offers truly fascinating insights into the labor and craftmanship that go into making a British best double.

Everything, and I mean everything (with a little CNC machine tool help for the roughing in, of course), is hand made.

I loved watching the craftsmen use their tools, many of them specialized and hand made themselves, as they formed and shaped and refined the many parts that make up a double shotgun or rifle. It's good to know that such skills still exist. I hope they are never lost to us.

Guys check the surround sound settings on your TV, sound system etc... Also check the settings of all the other sound enhancing effects on the TV's menu. Turn these effects processors all off and then see if the DVD sound improves.

It gave me good insight into the construction of my sidelock. It is a collaborative effort between the action/barrel/rib makers in the trade over there and the finish work over here. I'll be able to document the work as it progresses. I expect it to be fully comparable to what H&H puts out.
