I guess we all agree that the cross-bolt was a W.W. Greener design...
...so...who was the first to use side-clips???
...and...do side-clips strengthen the action???

Someone please correct me here, because I am sure I am mistaken, but I was under the belief that "side clips" on shotgun/drillings/DR's began with JP Sauer.
I know that Merkel has been well known for them for some time.
I am convinced they do strengthen a guns' action, but not as much as does say double locking lugs or a Greener cross bolt.

I believe that is correct, and Merkel, Simpson, and Sauer all used the same A&D actions and all used Side clips, and so-called Greener cross bolts all made in SAUL, East Germany till the blockade deviding Germany after WWII was lifted. By this time they started making the A&D actions themselves, because they were unavailable from England!

Lane,
It may have been Greener. I have his book, but man it's incredibly boring and refuse to look through it to find out. It's properly displayed in my office on the bookshelf.
If Greener did in fact invent the cross-bolt and side clips, he must have been sober when he did so, because I am convinced he was drunk when he came up with the Greener side-safety. I have owned at least 6 drillings with those awful things. If only the old Sauers and Merkels had a decent safety.
